The drop off this year in talent between JOe Thomas and the next OT is going to be a large one since Long and Baker are staying in school. Levi Brown is probably the next rated OT and he is clear notch beloww Thomas. Look at the other positions and you will not see that big drop off. DE is probably the second biggest drop off.

QB-Russell,Qunn, Brohm-any one of them could come out on top
RB-Peterson,Lynch-Russ says Oaklnad may considr Lynch at #1
WR-Johnson, Jarret, Ginn-Johnson is the best but the other guys rae right there.
OL-Thomas...........................................Brown
DE-Adams, Quentin Moses-Adams is clearly the better prospect
DT-Branch,Pitcock-Not a huge dropoff between the two
CB-Cason,Revis,McCauley,Hall-any one of those guys could be the top CB
S-Landry, Nelson-there are right on par with each other

i left out LB because none are projected that highly. Posluzny,Timmons, Blades seem to be the best.

Russell reminds me of a bigger and stronger (less fast) version of Vince Young - complete with the so-called funky delivery.

He "dart throws", but his wrist seems to be so strong that the ball gets there in time anyway. He'll still need a lot of polishing (i.e. making quicker decisions, knowing when to flatten out a pass, when to give it more trajectory and the difference between delivering a good deep pass and throwing a "pop fly"), but there's no reason he can't get coached up into someone really special.

I think Detroit takes Quinn even if Brohm comes out. But who knows. I don't think there is any way Dwayne Jarrett is drafted ahead of Johnson.

Mitch, I do agree with you, however, that the Cards might take Johnson if he is available, even if Thomas is there. I mean, who better would know how to utilize him along with Boldin and Fitz, than Norm Chow. I'm now 50/50 between Rivera and Chow as our new head coach.

What about this. What if Peterson and Johnson are available? Who would you recommend the Cards take?

i cannot see johnson on the radar at all....if he is on the board and thomas is on the board look for a tradedown which might allow us to have our cake and it eat...we don't want to become a reincarnation of the lions..there is only one ball and a running back that needs 25+ carries to be effective.

Russel has signed with an agent and is in the draft. Good news for the Cards as it likely adds another guy to the top 5.

LSU's Russell to enter draft after junior seasonESPN.com news services

A news conference is scheduled Wednesday to announce the decision, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Sunday.

Russell, a 6-foot-6, 260-pounder from Mobile, Ala., was the nation's No. 3-ranked quarterback in passing efficiency this season. He threw for a career-high 332 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers' 41-14 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday night.

Russell will finish his LSU career with 6,525 yards and 52 touchdowns in three seasons -- two as a full-time starter.

His coming out is good news for the Cards as most likely both Russell and Quinn will be picked in the top 4 before us. Someone will drop to us like Thomas.

With Petrino leaving Louisville for the Falcons, I 'm about 98% sure that Brohm will go's into the draft.

I am starting to wonder if we can have 3 straight QB's go 1,2,and 3 in the draft this year.

I think you may be right, Joe...someone may trade up with Cleveland, although I don't think they are completely sold on Charlie Frye, either.

The Browns aren't even remotely sold on Frye.BUt, if they stay where they are, it would be very hard to pass on Peterson with the state of their running game.

So, given the sort of player that appears will be available to us (i.e. Peterson and/or Johnson) is Thomas worthy of the number five pick? Under the BPA theory. From what little I've seen of him, I'd say absolutely not. I would even take Alan Branch over him. But that's just me. And of course this is under the assumption that we tag BIG.

If I was drafting and had first choice, I'd pick Russell over either of the other two.

I think Russell goes #1, maybe Brohm #2 (if he goes pro, which he probably will), not sure where Quinn ends up. Taken before Troy Smith, but 3rd QB taken.

Troy Smith is about 5'8. I would stay away from him.

He will be taken somewhere. I'd like it if the Texans could get him in the second round. He's too good, aside from the height dealie, to leave out in the cold. For second round money he's worth a risk.

But some team will probably reach for him. A sleeper in the draft is the Universtiy of Houston's Kevin Kolb.

I may be exaggerating juuuuuust a bit. But he's not much more than 5'10. I don't know how he'll project to the pros but QB's that short tend be few and far between.

The question on him is weight, the question on Brohm is he had ACL surgery, the question on Quinn is how much of his success was him, how much was Weiss.

FYI the local rumor is that the raiders would NOT take Marshawn #1 they'd like to possibly trade down and pick him a bit later. Depends on who they hire and what he thinks of Walter as a coach I imagine.

And ESPN is saying Calvin Johnson is coming out so I wonder if he knows Oakland won't pick him?

I like Troy Smith a lot. All he does is do anything and everything it takes to win. I see him as the next Antwaan Randle El. I'd draft him as early as the 2nd round.

Yeah, I doubt people give him much of a chance. Flutie had to go to Canada for years. I think Smith might have to follow a similar route to get a legitimate NFL QB shot without this --"In the meantime, why don't you play some WR for us?"
