The New York Giants signed two veteran free agent quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston at the end of March. They had hoped to lure future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to the Big Apple, but he is still biding his time and the Giants were done waiting.
The team brought in Winston first, who says that Saquon Barkley made him take a closer look at the Giants.
During the Super Bowl, Winston worked as a correspondent for FOX Sports during Super Bowl week, and when he saw Barkley talking to reporters, he asked the star running back who he should sign with. Barkley suggested the Giants, which Winston said made him think.
"Yeah, the process was as fresh as it was of me asking Saquon where should I go. Like I said, I don't believe in coincidences but when he threw the Giants out there, it really gave me and my team [something to think about]. Hmm, what they doing over there? What is their vision?" he said Tuesday.
Barkley's suggestion is what made Winston look at the Giants a little bit closer to see if it was a good fit.
"This free agency process is different every single year. With Aaron and Russ holding up the market for the beginning of the free agency, it was stuck, it was tough. A lot of teams had committed to them. Had their hopes and dreams of getting those two guys or other guys in the future," he said. "This team was one of the few teams that gave me an opportunity, that wanted to have me in, wanted me to see the building, wanted me to connect coach with Coach [Brian] Daboll and just see what the Giants were all about."
The Giants may not be done adding to the quarterback room, either. The 2025 NFL draft is just a few weeks away and rumors are that the Giants may still select Shedeur Sanders with the third pick. There are still decisions to be made for this team, but adding Winston and Wilson gives them a solid foundation.
"I took that to heart, and I'm happy that Saquon put that energy in the air for me to come to the big city, to the Big Apple and be a G-man," Winston said.
