Texas baseball ace Jared Spencer departed Thursday's game against Auburn with soreness in his pitching arm, Longhorns coach Jim Schlossnagle said.
Spencer allowed a home run to Ike Irish in the top of the third inning. He then threw two pitches to the next Auburn batter before pitching coach Max Weiner emerged from the dugout to visit with Spencer on the mound. Schlossnagle and a member of the Texas training staff followed, and Spencer was removed from the game.
"I think he'll be fine," Schlossnagle said postgame. "We'll have people look at him tomorrow. Obviously, we'll handle him with kid gloves."
Texas went on to beat Auburn, 3-2, in the first game of a three-game set on Thursday. With the Easter holiday on Sunday, the series began a day earlier than usual, giving Spencer one less day to recover than he's accustomed to.

Schlossnagle said that he was "a little concerned" with the prospect of starting Spencer on short rest, but the star lefthander insisted he felt great in the buildup to his start.
But Spencer showed a dip in his fastball velocity that alarmed Weiner and Schlossnagle. Usually sitting between 94 and 97 miles per hour with his heater, Spencer threw a fastball at 92 mph to Irish on his home run. He followed with a 91 mph fastball to Auburn cleanup hitter Cooper McMurray that prompted the Longhorns to remove him from the game.

After his abbreviated outing, Spencer holds a 3.27 ERA on the season. He has collected 66 strikeouts in 52⅓ innings of work.
"Obviously he was just a little sore," Schlossnagle said. "So hopefully it's nothing. I think the beauty of us getting him out there on Thursday, we've got plenty of time to rest him, even if we had to bump him back to the back end of next weekend or skip a start."
The Longhorns turned to last season's Friday starter, Max Grubbs, out of the bullpen after Spencer went down. He pitched 4⅓ scoreless frames to lower his season ERA to 1.50. Dylan Volantis closed out the game with his ninth save, retiring all six Auburn batters he faced.
