New York Dairy Creates Wine-Flavored Ice Cream
Monday, March 26, 2007

BOONVILLE, N.Y. — A central New York dairy is raising eyebrows with its latest creation — wine-flavored ice cream.

After about two years of product development, Boonville's Mercer's Ice Cream has created ice cream in three different wine flavors: Ala Port Wine, Peachy White Zinfandel and Red Raspberry Chardonnay.

Officials at the small, locally owned Oneida County dairy say the new flavors are finally being scooped up by restaurants in New York City. A marketing consultant for the business thinks they've got a national product on their hands.

The idea originated several years ago when Mercer's officials were working Pride of New York product fairs, displaying ice cream next to their counterparts from area wineries.

But if you want to taste the new confection, better bring along some identification. The ice creams each have an alcohol content of 5 percent and won't be served to minors.

Ah, the Boones Farm. Memories (or lack thereof).

I like wine. And I like ice cream. I even like a little raspberry or apple spiced wine on my ice cream every now and again. But why take two things that are spectacular on their own and force them into a combined state of interest, kinda like marriage? I think no good can come of this.

Slamming bottles of boones as fast as possible was a great hobby of mine. Good times.

In college, we would write on the labels what we were doing or how we were feeling that night and save the bottles as souveniurs. We had a lot of recycling to do when we moved out. But, I peeled all the labels off those bottles and kept them. Still have them actually, lol.

Anyone drink port wine? I LOVE port. Great with cheese. Maybe Ill have a sampler patter of port wine ice cream, with a chocolate tobacco leaf sauce and a slice of English Chedddar. That sounds good (I just threw in the tobacco sauce to be weird, but cigars go well with port, too.)

I drink Port. While it's not my favorite style of wine (I'm diehard for Pinot Noir) I definatly enjoy it from time to time.

You can get some exotic ice creams at Thai food places. The most exotic one I've tried is the Wasabi and Green Tea Ice cream.

The green tea tastes like green tea, the Wasabi just has a tangy flavor
