BOSTON — After Jayson Tatum was in clear pain following a hard fall, there was a hush that fell over the TD Garden crowd. Celtics fans chanted “MVP” for their star forward, who got back up on his feet to a roar in the fourth quarter Sunday.
Tatum appeared to suffer an apparent right wrist injury as he got it taped up after the fall. But Tatum stayed in the game as the Celtics went on to beat the Magic 103-86 in Game 1 of the first-round series.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla gave a positive update postgame, saying Tatum was good. The All-Star said as much himself, saying he felt alright after landing on it. Tatum confirmed he got an X-ray on the wrist, adding it was “clean” and “good.” There was throbbing pain, but Tatum added it went away.
So at this point, there doesn’t appear to be any reason why Tatum’s injury is anything serious. Tatum finished Sunday’s game with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two assists in his 40 minutes, posting a team-high plus-23. He didn’t shoot efficiently, but the Celtics still came away with the win.
Tatum closed out the playoff victory even though he was in pain. The foul was upgraded to a flagrant-1 on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope after review, though Tatum missed both free throws afterwards with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter. Tatum went up for a dunk when he was fouled on his way up.
The Celtics will hope Tatum’s wrist injury isn’t anything serious going forward. While he finished through the game, how the wrist responds will be worth monitoring going forward. The Celtics took the 1-0 series lead after blowing out the Magic, holding Orlando to just 37 points in the second half.
