Is anyone as concerned as I am regarding Rutledge as our new quarterbacks coach. Surely there were better choices to help our franchise quarterback. This guys has no NFL coaching experience. I realize he played but still there had to be better choices.

You express a reasonable concern. To allay your fears somewhat:

- QB coaches usually fall into two categories: (a) crusty old Sid Gillman or Norman Chow gurus or (b) bright young guys who use QB Coach as an entry position to move up to OC and possibly HC.

- There was a time not so long ago when the Cardinals didn't have a QB coach (and many of us fans thought this was a serious sin of omission). Our reasoning was that both young and old QB's need special attention - from someone who can pick up a flaw in footwork or inconsistency in mechanics. There was also a school of thought that maintains that the tender egos of QB's needed a buffer to protect them from abrasive OC's and HC's (i.e. give the QB a shoulder to lean on).

- If you can accept this, you might buy the case in favor a young coach who (a) knows how to play the game, (b) the QB can relate to (c) is good at analyzing the mechanics of the position and (d) demands perfection and consistency of execution.

- You don't necessarily need a Norm Chow to do this (Matt probably learned a great deal from Norm already). Rutledge was highly regarded as a draft prospect, played in the NFL for a decade and a half and had a sensational W & L record as a high school HC. What I see in him is a young up & comer who's had enough playing and head coaching experience (albeit at a lower level) to be ready to move up and pursue an NFL career.

- As such, he needn't be a guru. (Matt's already pretty advanced for a young QB in his knowledge of the position). The important thing is that Rutledge stays close to our QB's to make sure they execute at a high level on a consistent basis.

To put it in a different light - Nearly every OC was once a QB Coach. Most successful HC's were once either an OC or a DC. You gotta start somewhere.

I am not really concerned. I would be more concerned if the Cards had hired Wade Phillips as head coach. Or if Rutledge had to coach Jeff Blake, Josh McNown :) or Mike Buck.

Between Rutledge and Warner our Matt will have all the attention he needs. Ditto to the rest Jeff!

I'll take "Bad QBs the Cardinals thought were the answer" for $500, Alec.

I am shocked and thrilled that Jackass Jones is hiring Wade Phillips as head coach. Wade is a decent defensive coordinator but has failed already as a head coach.
