Anthony Covetta could see the growth in his basketball game as his high school years went by.

“My development from freshmen-senior was a huge gap, and took a lot of early mornings and late nights,” the Jefferson senior said.

Covetta, a Division II honorable mention All-Ohio choice as a junior, parlayed that work into a record-setting senior season for the Falcons.

It also led him to being selected the Ashtabula County Player of the Year in boys basketball for the 2024-25 season, as voted on by the county coaches.

“Winning county Player of the Year means a lot to me,” Covetta, a 6-foot-3 guard, said. “It’s another goal I set out to achieve at some point in my career.”

He finished his senior season averaging 29.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Covetta made 5.2 3-pointers per contest, and shot 44% from beyond the arc.

“My family played a big role [in my development], giving me the opportunity to train,” Covetta said. “My trainer, [former Geneva player] Grant Mihalick, has had a huge role in that and just being a role model in my life.”

Falcons coach Rob Pisano said Covetta’s deserving of the recognition due to offseason hard work over the last three years.

“I think Anthony has been great all year,” Pisano said. “He really puts the time in during the summer, and I hope he has great success in his next four years.”

Mihalick, the owner of One Percent Basketball, said Covetta has had a relentless pursuit of being the best version of himself on and off the court.

“When I first trained him in his eighth-grade year, I knew something was special about him because of the passion he had for basketball,” Mihalick said. “Four years later, he’s transformed himself into a college basketball player and more importantly, a great person. I couldn’t be more proud of Anthony and how far he’s come.”

Covetta started his prep career at Lakeside.

He transferred to Jefferson, and surpassed 1,000-career points in the 2023-24 season.

The 2024-25 season arrived — and so did Covetta.

Against Edgewood in early January, Covetta poured in 46 points, which broke the school record of 45 Joe DeGeorge set during the 2023-24 season.

A week later, Covetta netted 48 points against Lakeside, breaking his own mark.

But Covetta wasn’t finished.

In mid-February, he scored 33 points during a 59-54 win over West Geauga to become the school’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Sam Hitchcock.

Then, in his final regular season at home vs. Wickliffe, Covetta tallied 24 points to break the Ashtabula County all-time scoring mark. He finished his career with 1,700 overall points in boys basketball.

Grand Valley graduate AJ Henson held the previous mark for more than a decade.

“This year has been great,” Covetta said. “My senior [year] was filled with great memories and being able to receive recognition and accolades with this team has truly been amazing.”

He was named the Chagrin Valley Conference Player of the Year and shared the Division IV Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year award with Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Connor Hernan, and will likely be an All-Ohio selection for the second straight season when the teams are announced starting Monday.

Then, there’s the team achievements.

The Falcons shared the CVC Lake title with Madison and Geneva, won a Division IV sectional crown and hung tough with Akron Buchtel before coming up short 55-44 in a district final matchup.

“What I’ll miss about high school basketball is the energy and support of the community,” Covetta said. “I want to say a huge thank you to my teammates. They were the best group I could ask for.

“Thank you to my coaches and AD for leading me, and most importantly, thank you to my parents and family. Without them and their support, this wouldn’t be possible.”

Covetta is sifting through offers to find the right college for him, both academically and athletically.

“I’m looking for a program that is going to look to develop me and look out for my best interest,” he said.
