Portland State has scheduled a 3:30 p.m. news conference today to announce the hiring of Jerry Glanville as head football coach of the Vikings.

Glanville, 65, is a former NFL head coach with the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons who has served as defensive coordinator at the University of Hawaii the past two years.

The colorful and controversial Glanville met with PSU officials Monday and Tuesday and was offered the position on Tuesday night after a selection committee meeting. He is expected to bring former PSU head coach Mouse Davis — who also served on the Hawaii staff the past two years — with him as offensive coordinator.

Davis, known as the father of the run-and-shoot offense, says there is "a strong possibility" that he would return to the Vikings. "But we haven't talked yet, and I would not come if I could not work a deal with jerry to make sure I can run what I run -- not some watered down thing."

Glanville replaces Tim Walsh, now offensive coordinator at Army.

The other coaching candidate interviewed by PSU officials was Greg Lupfer, the Vikings' defensive coordinator who has been a member of the team's coaching staff the past 12 years. Lupfer will be interviewed by Glanville about a position on his staff.
