PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The Mets were forced to hold their breath one more time on Monday afternoon.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jesse Winker was hobbled on a swing that resulted on a pop-up to third base. The Mets third baseman jogged gingerly toward first base before pausing down the line as the out was made.

Winker exited the game before his next at-bat as the designated hitter in the bottom of the third inning. He was replaced by Ryan Clifford in the Mets' No. 2 spot in the lineup.

The nature of Winker's injury was not immediately known.

The Mets lineup has been hammered with injuries over the last two weeks, with Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil landing on the shelf last week. Alvarez has a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, while McNeil has an oblique strain.

One of the Mets' other options to play designated hitter, Starling Marte, did not make his spring debut until March 10 as he worked through discomfort from a deep bone bruise in his right knee. Winker had also been spending more time in the corner outfield spots while Brandon Nimmo progressed through swelling in his own knee.

Nimmo made his debut in the outfield on Monday afternoon.
