The Giants weren’t necessarily on Jevon Holland’s radar heading into free agency -- but when his agents got a call from the team late on the first night of free agency, the two sides quickly got together started drawing up a contract.
A few hours later, they were able to come to an agreement -- officially making Holland a New York Giant for the next three years and the eighth highest-paid safety in the league.
“I was super juiced,” he said Thursday. “I got the callback that I was officially going to be a Giant and I was really excited. The Giants have a long history of successful football and I really wanted to be a part of that, especially in New York — so it’s fun.”
Two members of the organization actually played a role in bringing Holland to the Big Apple.
Current Big Blue pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was teammates with him during his collegiate days at the University of Oregon and he was in his ear early on during the free agency process trying to get the band back together.
Holland also spoke to former Giants safety Xavier McKinney as well, as the two share an agent -- and while the front office opted to let him walk in free agency last offseason, he still had nothing but praise for the organization that drafted him.
“Once I figured out I was going to be a Giant, I reached out,” he said on McKinney. “I just asked him how the facility was, the people inside, and what the environment was like being a Giant. He had nothing but positive things to say — he said I was going to love it.
“The place itself, it breeds football and the fanbase is great. He just added to the excitement and reassured that I made the right choice.”
So now Holland comes to New York -- where he’ll play the role that would’ve been filled by McKinney if he were to return in a young secondary that also added Paulson Adebo in free agency and has returning starters Deonte Banks, Dru Phillips, and Tyler Nubin.
While the 25-year-old defender is coming off back-to-back down campaigns after suffering MCL sprains in both knees two years ago, he’s confident he’ll be able to return to the dominant form he showed early in his career -- and maybe even better.
“The Giants and the people they’ve brought in have a desire to breed excellence,” he said. “I think this environment is something that will allow me to be that and to grow. I absolutely think there’s plenty of room left to grow -- I’m nowhere near my peak.
“The Giants have the exact environment and the personnel I need to be able to reach those new heights and to lead a group of men and create a winning culture. The Giants have a history of winning culture, so I feel like it was the right choice.”
