Mar. 15—MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — The No. 5-seeded University of Jamestown men's hockey team did just enough to get a 3-2 overtime win over No. 12-seeded Grand Canyon University in the first round of the ACHA National Championships on Saturday, March 15, at the St. Louis Ice Zone.

The Jimmies' Jordan Baranesky got his team on the board less than two minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The lead lasted until the 10:59 mark of the period when the Antelopes' Owen Hanson cleaned up a loose puck in the crease to tie the game up at one. The game would not be tied for very long though as approximately two minutes later, the Jimmies' Jacob Thomas fired a wrist shot in to give his team the 2-1 lead.

"This team, there's no quit, we believe and we keep going shift after shift," Jimmies head coach Dean Stork said. "We have to rely on our compete and our belief."

Both goalies were able to withstand quality scoring chances in the second period while not allowing anything. In the second period, the Jimmies' Brandon Weare saved all 13 shots he faced and the Antelopes' Dmytro Kubrytskyi saved all 10 shots he faced.

Midway through the third period, the Antelopes (15-14) had a brilliant chance to tie the game up when they drew a penalty shot with 15:02 to go in the game but the shot sailed wide of the net keeping the Jimmies in front. The Lopes would keep pushing though and with 2:34 to go in the game, Hanson scored to tie the game up at two.

Before the overtime, Stork said he told his team to rely on their experience in overtime games previously.

"We've been in this position before," Stork said. Now we learn from it. We lost to Minot in overtime in the conference finals so we learned from it. We kept it simple. We were strong with pucks, we threw everything at the net. We got a good bounce and Fortin was there to bury it. It's all learning, learning experience going through it."

While both teams had chances in the extra period, the Jimmies were the ones to bury theirs when Zane MacDonald threw a puck in front to a cutting Brad Fortin who tipped it into the waning net to give the Jimmies the win.

The Jimmies are back in action at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, when they face off against No. 4-seeded Liberty University.
