Apr. 7—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown softball team had a big fourth inning and it carried them to an 11-2 win over Dakota State University (South Dakota) on Monday, April 7, at the Nelson Family Bubble.

The Jimmies attacked the Trojans' Analicia Burgos early in the first inning with the longest at-bat of the frame being a seven-pitch at-bat from Kaitlin McCartney. In total, Burgos threw 23 pitches in the first inning. The Jimmies broke through thanks to a bases loaded walk from Kylie Burgos to go up 1-0.

The Jimmies got two more in the second inning with the first one coming on an obstruction call at home plate to go up 3-0. The Trojans were able to break through in the bottom of the second when Michelle Evdos hit a triple to right to score a run and bring it to within two runs at 3-1. The Trojans had a chance to bring it closer when Evdos attempted to scurry home on a wild pitch but a throw from McCartney to the pitcher Hope Ransome got her at the plate.

The Trojans did get another one in the third on an error to make it 3-2. The Jimmies blew the game open in the fourth when they scored five runs in the frame, with the biggest blow coming from Kayla Quintanilla, who hit a bomb off the back wall in right-center to push the lead out to 8-2. The Jimmies added three more in the top of the seventh to go up by nine runs.

"I think she's got good opposite field power," Jimmies head coach Kevin Gall said. "So when she can get that stroke going it's gonna be tough to get her out because a lot of people want to pitch outside."

The Jimmies' offense exploded in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring 14 runs on their way to a 14-4 win over the Trojans.

The Trojans (4-25) got off to a fast start when they scored three runs in the bottom of the first on four hits and one error to take a 3-0 lead. The Jimmies responded in the bottom of the first when Sidnie Aasen hit a run-scoring single in the second to make it 3-1. The Jimmies' Maddie Spaeth brought her team closer with a triple into the gap in left-center to score a run and bring it to within one run at 3-2. Spaeth finished the day going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs. She also came a home run away from the cycle.

"I was just looking for a pitch to hit and I just put a nice easy swing on it, something to hit," Spaeth said. "... I was looking for my pitch and she was giving it to me. So I was lucky."

The Trojans responded with one more in the third to push their lead back out to two runs at 4-2. The Jimmies (24-9) would not quit, though with the visitors using two run-scoring triples to steal the momentum and take a 9-4 lead. In the frame, the Jimmies scored seven runs on five hits and two errors. The Jimmies' offense kept spraying the ball around the yard in the fifth inning with five runs on five hits and two errors to get the 14-4 win.

The Jimmies' Maddie Hairgrove came in, in relief and shut the door on the Trojans over the last 2.2 innings. She did not give up a run, while giving up one hit, striking out five and walking one batter. The Trojans used two relief pitchers, Analicia Burgos and Mason Usselman, the two combined to pitch 1.2 innings giving up, two earned runs on six hits, while walking two hitters.

Out of the Jimmies' 14 runs, only 7 were earned as the team also stole four bases. In total, the Trojans had six errors in the game.

"We practice those situations quite a bit," Gall said. "We did make a few mistakes running the bases today but the whole idea is make them make a play and hopefully like they did today they throw it into center field or have a miscue where we maybe give up an out but we score a run. We'll trade an out for a run. In a big game we're certainly going to do that. It's something we've really gotten good at in the last month."

The Jimmies are back in action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, when they go to the University of North Dakota.
