From the AZ Republic:

"The Suns are trying to build a case that Johnson deserves consideration for NBA's Most Improved Player. His numbers from last year are improved in every significant category."

He has improved beyond his statistics including defense and leadership.

Right now the only part of JJ's game that remains weak is his turnovers. His passing is not always crisp and dribbles into traffic too much. But he is emerging as a solid second tier star.

Zach Randolph should be a lock. If he doesn't win, it's because of bias against his off-court incidents (which, incidentally, have dried up since Wallace was traded away).

If it was just pure percentages, how about Brian Cardinal of GS. Last year his stats were:

5 games averaging 3 minutes per game and 0.8 ppg on 25% shooting and 1 rpg.

This year he is averaging 9.8 ppg on 45.9% shooting including 41.3% for three; 87% of his free thows and 4.5 rpg in 22.8 minutes.

All of this on salary of $664,000.

If he is not a candidate for MIP, Cardinal should at least have a shot for best bargain in the NBA.

Eric, you're a math guy, right? Do you want to do something fun which would make my head spin like figure out who has the most overall contribution increase percentage? We could have it sound very official and technical by saying things like "Zach Randolph has a near record setting 46.7 OCIP this year." Then we could get mad when people write things like "OCIP percentage."*

*If anyone doesn't get this joke, they can pay me to explain it them using money from their automatic ATM machine.

Heh. I'd go get the payment, but I forgot my PIN number, and besides, I have to administer an SAT test.

I am a former math guy. Now my field is rather different, but I still like playing with numbers. Errntknght is the board's only resident mathematician, so far as I know, although capologist has also demonstrated quite a facility with computation.

So, I hope I'm not missing another joke, but what the heck is "overall contribution increase percentage"? I have some idea of what you mean, but the task of formulating such a thing would be much greater than that of figuring out who has the highest one.

I understand that you made this comment just by gonig off of stats, but come on, the guy played 15 minutes in a season. What kind of comparison are you going to make on 15 minutes. You might as well put players that were injured for the whole season on that list also. There stats from last season to this season would also be a great improvement.

I barely got out of pre-algebra. Once letters started being put in the problems I started trying to figure it out by thinking, ok there is a A and D is the problem, so I would start counting how many letters were in between, and that would be my answer. Figures I guess, I was an honors english student.

Actually Brian has been in the league for four years and this was the first year he has done anything. He played five games in Washington and two years in Detroit where he played in 8 and 15. The reason he played so few games in Washington was because he was cut in February and spent the rest of the year in Spain.

BTW, Brian's minutes have dropped lately since the Warriors have been starting Mickael Pietrus at SF.
