I don't understand. She said land values are skyrocketing and that businesses are fighting to get into Glendale now. Where are the hookers, drugs and crime?

Nice piece, Jo!

I would have liked the stadium built in the east valley, but Scruggs and the folks in Glendale had the vision to see beyond the end of their own noses.

The Cardinals Stadium, Coyote arena, PIR all in the west valley; the sports center of the Phoenix metro area has shifted. The west valley has now become the destination for new growth and development in the Phoenix metro area, while Tempe and Mesa grow old.

That's the oldest argument around against stadiums(and casinoes for that matter) and it's classic reversing cause and effect. As I'm sure most of us know the reason stadiums often end up with crime problems nearby is simple, they tend to build stadiums where there is lots of available, CHEAP, land, and that tends to be in low income, high crime areas.

Hunters Point was bad before Candlestick Park was built, same with the area of Oakland where the A's and Raiders play.

When the stadiums goes in the crime everyone used to ignore is suddenly front and center, and suddenly everyone is concerned, and they blame it on the stadium.

Jo, thank you very much for the article. I didn't realize that Glendale (230,000) was that big a city. The mayor seems to have her head on right and I hope that the city cashes in big with the new stadium. Does anyone know how Glendale compares to Green Bay, population wise?
