Joe, Jr., and his staff could have said, early in the season, "Well, we'll wait for Williams and Womack to finish out the year, and start rebuilding next season."
Instead, we're 4 or 5 games out of the wild-card post-season, while (a) developing the rookies and (b) adding pieces to round out the team for this season.
Look at the decisions that the Brass stepped up and made! Williams was let go, and his salary absorbed, in favor of Hillenbrand. That's a step up!
Womack was sent away for a low-level Minor Leaguer, allowing .300 hitting Cintron to take over SS.
Overbay was sent down to work on his batting, and make room for Counsell and Kata/Spivey in the lineup.
And now, Mondesi, a 20-20 guy at worst, is added at the expense of Dellucci (we love him, but he's not a lead RF with his 2 HR's), Prinz (who has never shown the determination to be a strong setup or closer), and a Minor Leaguer.
If we make it into the post-season, who will be a better candidate for Exec of the Year than Joe Garagiola, Jr. His regime has shown guts!
And, if we stay healthy into the post-season, I believe we'll have the makeup to go all the way -- the best starting 4 in baseball, an extremely strong bullpen, a solid middle-of-the-lineup, and a good supporting cast throughout the lineup.
How can anyone fault JGjr for the moves he wasn't afraid to make?
