The last pitch Joe Girardi caught in the majors was as a Cardinal. The next team he manages may be in St. Louis, too. The Cardinals abruptly canned Mike Matheny on Saturday night, following an 8-2 loss to the Reds, a defeat that dropped St. Louis to 47-46 and 7 1/2 games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs. According to The Post’s Joel Sherman, Girardi has a good relationship with St. Louis president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Girardi, who was not retained by the Yankees despite reaching Game 7 of the ALCS last season, told Sherman he is not commenting at this time.
