Johnson charged with marijuana possession

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TIFTON, Ga. -- Green Bay Packers defensive end Joe Johnson was charged with marijuana possession while driving to Florida after a deputy saw his car stopped on the highway.

Johnson posted bond of $1,625 and was released from jail Thursday, sheriff's Capt. Bobby Brannen said.

Packers spokesman Lee Remmel said Thursday night the team was aware of what happened but had no other comment. Johnson's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, did not immediately return a call.

Deputy David Hardy said he saw Johnson's hazard lights flashing. As he approached, Johnson got out and met him at the rear of the car. He told the deputy he needed directions to Tallahassee, Fla.

Hardy said he smelled marijuana smoke, searched the car and found what was believed to be a misdemeanor amount of marijuana.

Johnson signed with the Packers in 2002 as an unrestricted free agent and played in five games. He missed Green Bay's minicamp this month after triceps surgery.

I do take a strong stance against drunk driving (or driving under the influence of other drugs), always have. IMO, if you drive under the influence, especially with all of the awareness these days, you are a loser. That doesn't mean a person cannot change, etc, but for that choice they were most definitely a loser.

I was in SADD in high school, have had friends killed in alcohol-related crashes, and have been hit head on by an extreme-dui-driver myself (he also had his 7-yr-old in his car...he was charged with 4 felonies), so this is a big issue with me.

If you want to drink or get high...do it at home or get a ride home. It really is not too much to ask.

I find that pretty reasonable...

Another One Besides Johnson Bites Dust

Apparently, Giants defensive tackle, Kieth Hamilton was also stopped on a marijuana, (oops! didn't see Jim O's other post - cocaine), weapons and drug paraphanalia possession charge. Buzz is that its a #2 NFL no-no.

How can these guys be such BONEHEADS!!!! They are like children that continue to believe that there is no chance of THEM getting caught! STUPID!

My employer conducts random drug tests, which I deplore and believe to be a violation of my human rights if not Constitutional rights. However; bottom line; they do the tests SO I don't risk my job by using drugs, PERIOD!

Thing is if I choose to ignore the risk to my job and do drugs I might could probably find another job that pays basically the same... Where are these guys; when three time offenders; going to find a replacement for their bloated incomes?

BONEHEADS!!! :trout:

I don't remember many of us riding David Boston too hard.

That was of course because he was "innocent".

So Johnson had a misdemeanor amount of marijuana,... big deal.

Legalize it and stop harrassing citizens who use it.

Have you all read than new book "Reefer Madness" about the ins and outs of the "drug war" on marijuana? It's very interesting and on most of the bestseller lists.

We all know the government doesn't mind if you have a fridge full of TAXED drugs, but those untaxed ones are tearing this country apart!

But like Brian said, the reason I think Johnson is a pri*k is that he was driving his car under the influence. With a $30 million salary, you'd think he could call a cab.

Did Johnson endanger someone? There is no proof that Johnson was smoking marijuana any time during his drive. The only known fact is that Johnson had a small amount of marijuana with him. The cop said he smelled pot smoke but that could have just been a convenient excuse to search the car.

You note that he was not charged with driving under the influence. 1600$ bail for a misdemeanor pot possession charge? It sounds like a bunch of ******** to me.

Convenient, but it's also a valid one.

A black man with out of state plates? That car was getting searched even if it was a fart he smelled.

I don't disagree with you, but the fact that they found weed makes it pretty hard to accuse the officer of making up the fact that he smelled weed!

B*LLSHIT! THIS IS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM YELLING. COPS CAN BE COMPLETE NAZI'S. WHEN A COP SAYS HE "SMELLED POT IN THE CAR" IT IS LIKE TELLING YOUR DATE AFTER YOU HAD SEX THAT YOU HAVE A MEETING TOMMORROW. IT IS A LIE THAT COPS USE AND GET AWAY WITH ALL THE TIME. IT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST INJUSTICES IN THIS COUNTRY. EVERY TIME A COP GETS CAUGHT IN A LIE THEY SHOULD BE HUNG IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN, OR IF YOU WANT TO BE MEAN YOU CAN JUST PUT THEM IN A CAGE WITH ME AND LET ME RIP THERE THROAT OUT WITH MY TEETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DOWN WITH CORRUPT COPS!

Unless he had some Mawi Wowi or some really really good stuff. You are not going to smell pot from the window of a car.

Now I am for the legalization of pot, and for getting rid of manditory minimum sentencing for non-voilent crimes. But Johnson did break the law so he is in the wrong for that. But they way the cop went about searching the vehicle WAS TOTAL BULL.
No where was it stated that Johnson was stoned when he got pulled over. If he was then he committed a serious crime, and the cop was right to arrest him.

I just think the "I smelled pot excuse" is crap, and dangerous. All of you have jobs, and some have families that you would defend to the death. What if some jerk rookie cop with a hard on for power pulls you over, thinks your stoned, says he smells pot, searches your car, drops a dime bag, picks it up, arrests you, then plants more drugs on you, makes you a dealer, and prosecutes you as a felon. WHAT DO YOU DO THEN? Cause the judge don't care, your lawyer don't care. You are ****ed. YOu lose your job, and maybe your family and are a felon for the rest of your life.
AND THE FIRST %SSHOLE THAT THINKS THAT CAN'T HAPPEN WELL I WILL SEND YOU MY PAPERWORK! CAUSE IT DOES HAPPEN.

Fiasco I have interacted with you for a few years now and quite frankly Im offended by this statement.

Just because I pull over a "black guy with out of state plates" in no way means that I am going to toss his ride PERIOD!

I have to have proper PC to conduct such a search and if you think I am going to risk my career and a civil rights law suit all because I want to say I SMELLED POT *WINK WINK* Even though I didnt then you are sorely mistaken!

To imply that EVERY cop would is offensive to us who do the job and make the city a safer place for people such as you!

Unless they got a dog with them. They are not going to smell it. Maybe the weed in Arizona just is better than around NYC. Or at least smells more.

Calm down, Rugby.

If Johnson wasn't breaking the law, he wouldn't have gotten busted regardless of the cop's actions.

Myself (white) and my 3 friends (all white) stopped on the side of the road one night to fix a radiator hose (pin hole leak). A few minutes later, we had 4 cop cars there. They seperated us, and drilled us all on where we had been, where we were going, could they search the car, etc. Likely just being ***** to some teenagers on a slow weekend night, but they didn't really bother us and since none of us were breaking the law...they said good luck with the hose and took off.

I am no fan of bad cops, but it's hard for me to come down on the cop for catching a guy who was breaking the law. (And Fiasco - until the laws are changed - possession is a crime.)

Many criminals (guilty of far worse crimes) are caught on the road because of a broken-down vehicle, bad tags, traffic violation, etc.
