NASHVILLE, Tenn. ― Florida basketball has kept winning in March in its efforts to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Even heading into Selection Sunday, some questions were raised as to whether the SEC Tournament finals against the Florida Gators (29-4) and Tennessee (27-6) would serve as a de facto play-in game for the final No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
But according to ESPN bracketology expert Joe Lunardi, Florida already has a No. 1 seed locked up based on its overall resume.
"Florida will be the fourth No. 1 seed (West Region) after its passing of Alabama," Lunardi wrote in an X post Saturday night.
Lunardi back tracked somewhat in a post on Sunday saying Tennessee could pass Florida for the No. 1 seed but said he "highly doubted the committee would do so."
Florida beat No. 8 Alabama for the second time this month, rolling the Tide 104-82 in the SEC Tournament semifinals on Saturday behind 22 points and six assists from senior point guard Walter Clayton Jr.
UF rose to No. 2 in the KenPom rankings following the win and is just one of three teams in the nation in the Top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Duke and Houston are the others. The Gators have won 11 of their last 12 games and have averaged 99.5 points through their first two SEC Tournament games.
After UF's win over Alabama, Florida basketball coach Todd Golden said he felt the Gators secured a No. 1 seed.
"We're second on KenPom right now," Golden said. "Beat 'Bama twice, beat Auburn at Auburn. I don't really think it's a debate regardless of the result tomorrow. With that being said, another opportunity for us to get a really good win. Another big challenge."
