The New York Giants' main goal this offseason was to find a starting quarterback and a bona fide leader. They got both when they signed free agent Russell Wilson last week to a one-year deal.
General manager Joe Schoen added Wilson right after securing the services of another veteran free agent signal-caller, Jameis Winston. Giants fans have come back in off the ledge now that they have some clarity at quarterback for 2025.
"He's a 10-time Pro Bowler, a guy who's throwing for over 20 touchdowns, I believe it's every year except for two in his career," Schoen told Giants.com this week when asked what Wilson brings "right away" when he walks into the building.
"He played 11 games last year and threw for 16 [touchdowns]. So, the production, he knows what it looks like. He knows how to win. Leadership. I'm just excited to have a guy in the building with as many skins on the wall as he has at the quarterback position."
Wilson met with the media last week and seems to have a solid grasp on the Giants' current roster and situation. He did his homework, for sure. He knew all of the players he would be in the huddle with and what they were capable of.
"When you're playing the quarterback position, your best chance for success is being surrounded by weapons and being able to stay on your feet," Schoen said. "He obviously did his homework on not just the receivers but the offensive line, what we had there. But yeah, his knowledge of the league is very good. The fact that he was aware of some of our young players that played well last year and who he'll be working with, all those things were important to him when he ultimately made the decision to come to New York."
The Giants are looking forward to having some stability under center after years of questions and uncertainty.
