Joe Staley blows them away

By TFY Draft Preview

Posted Mar 15, 2007

All 32-teams, including the offensive line coaches from eleven different franchises, descended upon Central Michigan University this morning for the Chippewas pro-day. The early returns are in and the prospect they came to see did not disappoint.

Offensive tackle Joe Staley was the star of the show.

Weighing in at 304-pounds, Staley's forty-times ranged between 4.79-and-4.82 seconds. His times in the short-shuttle and 3-cone were 4.30 and 7.17-seconds respectively. Staley then marked 32-inches in the vertical jump and 9-feet-4-inches in the broad.

He looked outstanding in position drills. Staley did not participate in the bench press today, standing on the 27 repetitions he completed at the combine.

Several coaches on hand stated it was one of the best workouts by an offensive lineman they had ever witnessed. One coach claimed Staley "made millions for himself today" after the workout was complete.

The Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions all sent offensive line coaches to specifically watch Staley.

So to did the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. All three of these teams have set up dates to individually workout Staley.

While the other numbers from the workout have been slow coming in, sources on the scene have told us defensive end Dan Bazuin, who turned in a terrible performance at the combine, looked good today. He was faster and looked fluid during drills.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

How come we didn't have anybody there at his workout .. ???

He may one of our options in the 2nd round ... but maybe after this workout he might be going in the first round ...

Joes Staley was the star of the Chippewas' pro day? No way. I thought for sure he'd be out-shined by...uh, by....by the mascot that can do crazy dunks off of a trampoline.

Of course Staley was the star--it's central friggin michigan!

Seriously, though. I'm glad he did well. If we end up trading back its good to know he looks good.

32 in vert is what is most impressive to me. I don't know if I have ever seen a lineman with that type of vertical. You have to have a lot of power in your calf/thigh to be able to jump that high at his size.

Pat Kirwan did a write up at NFL.com where he reported that NFL scouts are saying that this draft is very shallow at offensive tackle, and that after Thomas, Brown and Staley, things really drop off.

He noted that Jeremy Trueblood, who was taken mid-third last year, would be the clear "fourth" tackle off the board in this draft.

FWIW -- per the trade charts, a package of the Cards second and third round draft picks would get them into around the #20 spot in the first round if they found a taker.

Wasn't Trueblood a 2nd round pick last year?

Your right -- I was thinking the #79 pick, but he was #59--

here is the quote from the Kirwan piece:

Another line coach said, "Jeremy Trueblood was a guy I thought went too high in the draft last year as the seventh tackle taken at No. 59, but I would take him over the players I have seen right now."

Context for the above -- the quote was talking about the guys after the first round tackles

But can he block?

Well, he certainly outperformed Layne Staley. Layne's vertical jump was recorded at -6 feet.

My attempt at humor usually fails. Either people don't get it, so it isn't funny, or people do get it, and it's even less funny.

It succeeds only on the level that I amuse myself, which is fortunately quite easy.

Pittsburgh cornerback Darrelle Revis ran a 4.38 and a 4.4 in the forty-yard dash at his school's Pro Day.

We don't take much stock in Pro Day results, but these are great times for a Cover 2 corner even if you add on a tenth of a second to account for a fast track or the wind. Revis looks like a surefire first-round selection.

I'm surprised by this comment....

It has been widely reported that Tony Ugoh looked REALLY good in combine workouts, and should have secured himself a spot in the lower 1st Round

This is real bad for the Cardinals.

Anyone who was thinking we were getting Staley in the second round can forget about it now.

It seems Staley will go in the late first round.

That leave the Cardinals no choice, IMO, with what to do at #5. Joe Thomas or Levi Brown.

Because if the Cardinals do not come out of the draft with a OT in the 1st or 2nd round then they are once again discarding thier top priority which is OT.

I really hope the Cardinals don't "out think" themselves and find themselves without a LT for the 2007 season.

Wow, you and I need to get a beer some time and sit around making ourselves laugh. Sounds very familiar. :)
