An interview with two HBO executives.

Looking forward, remember those two "Deadwood" movies that HBO told fans of the show were coming?
Maybe not going to happen.
It depends on whether David Milch's other HBO show, "John From Cincinnati," is picked up for a second season, the suits said, in which case he'd have to go right back to work writing that show.
Or not.
Right now, Milch is exhausted from working on "Cincinnati," Lombardo said.
HBO hasn't had the conversation with Milch about the movies, he also said.
"It's complicated," he also said.
"Of course, it's possible. ... It's doable, but it will be daunting," he also said.
"If David's game for this, then we will figure it out," he added.

WTF????

Deadwood is so much better than John from Cincinnati, it's not even funny. I guess we have to hope HBO doesn't pick up the show for a second season, so he can move on to the Deadwood projects.

here's my call - with or without JC being renewed, the Deadwood movies never see the light of day for a variety of reasons, the two biggest being $, scheduling.

Man I wish they would get deadwood going. JIC is just all over the place. Not near as good as deadwood.

Much to my chagrin, you're probably right.

How about just finishing what he started?

All successful series end before a segment of the audience is ready. If Milch made one more season of Deadwood, then there would be people upset that he didn't make two.

Rome, Carnivale, The Sopranos...they all ended with the audience wanting more.

Deadwood is over. People need to aacept it and move on.

PS - Why even compare Deadwood and JFC? They are two completely different shows. Can't they be liked or disliked on their own merits?

I don't buy that.
There was a sense of finality with every show you mentioned except Deadwood.

From the time this show was cancelled there was speculation from HBO that it would be finalized.

As a fan I feel cheated and I think deservedly so, thus the reason I have a hard time getting over it.

I have no idea whether it's HBO's fault or Milch's but that ending was wrong.

Fair enough, although I can't believe that the four hour finale will ever be filmed if it hasn't been filmed by now.

As much as I hate to say it, because I loved them all, Rome, Carnivale, and Deadwood all ended distinctively and with at least a degree of finality. Carnivale did have some mystery left to it and could certainly have continued, but the story line had in effect ended. Deadwood could have continued, sure, but it had pretty much been resolved. Rome was finished. It was my favorite of the three, but face it: when a season ends at the beginning of an era known as the Pax Romana (I think Romana--might be Romanus), the Peace of Rome, that lasts for a generation, then the show is done.

Edit: I was right, it is Pax Romana.

Please, explain to me how Deadwood was resolved?
Evidently I missed something.

Carnivale most certainly did NOT end with any finality. Come on now! Deaths of characters, rebirths of others--that's not finality, that is as big a cliffhanger as any show on television without the "To Be Continued" card at the end.

Deadwood, ended on the day of the election--so we have no idea who won what (although if you read up on Deadwood, you'd have a clue). The entire 3rd season was leading up to the elections and they effectively ended it without any kind of conclusion to them.

Rome definitely had a conclusive feel to it though.

Hearst left after fixing the election against Bullock, thus imposing his will. Swearengen and company, realizing they could not conduct full-scale bloodshed without ruining Deadwood had to let him go. It is crystal clear that Bullock lost the election, and that was the really important one (at least as far as the show made clear).

Carnivale had a lot of openings for another season, and had enough mysteries to warrant a lot more screen time, yes. The main story line had been completed, so it was certainly the end of the main story. It could easily have continued, as I've said, but at least it didn't end at a giant cliffhanger.

At least it didn't end before they fought.
