I know it's early in the season, however already there's a story developing that may eat up headlines very soon-- the rebirth of Josh Hamilton.

As many know, Hamilton was one of the most heralded prospects in quite some time when he was drafted by the Devil Rays in the 1999 MLB Draft. Lauded as a 5 tool future superstar, Hamilton was considered to be one of those guys on the fast track to Cooperstown before ever playing a game.

Fast forward to 2007, and you find Hamilton now-- a far cry from what he was expected to be, now in the Red organization after the Devil Rays all but gave up on him, leaving him on the Rule 5 list. Obviously it wasn't the talent that the Rays gave up on, it was the off field issues, the drug problems and the indifinite suspension that MLB handed down after Hamilton again failed to rehab properly.

However, there seems to be light at the end of this tunnel. Hamilton is now Cincinnati's 4th OF (which will lead to plenty of time to showcase his skills, with Ken Griffey Jr. in a perpetual state of injury) after an exceptional spring where he hit .403. So far, his success has pushed over in to the early season, as he's currently hitting .500 with two homers and 3 RBIs. For a guy written off for dead, any steps are baby steps, but it truly seems like Hamilton may FINALLY have realized what he had, what he lost (which could be in the upwards of millions of dollars) and what he had to do to regain that billion dollar talent that he threw away.

We've heard plenty of "reclamation stories" gone each direction-- some great, some horribly wrong.. So this leads to my question.. Do you root for guys like Josh Hamilton, the reclamation project "bad boys" to turn their baseball careers around?

Absolutely. The kid has been to hell and back and has taken total responsibility for his past actions and his future sobriety. I read a great story on him that I'll have to dig up.

ABomb, I agree that it's ALWAYS good to see someone pull their head up out of the sand and turn it around. Let's hope it's for the better and this is really him turning the corner.

Who I DON'T feel sorry for are people that get opportunity after opportunity yet never seem to learn their lesson. Steve Howe, Rest his soul, was a perfect example of someone I had real trouble feeling sorry for. That guy had the potential to be the most dominant closer of the 80s... Better than Lee Smith, better than Eckersley, better than them all. I grew up in New Jersey, in Phillies country, but still got to see plenty of highlights of the guy where he was throwing gas that noone on Planet Earth could hit. When he was on, he was unstoppable. However, the guy turned to the wrong path time and time again.

No, I don't like him and refuse to root for him. He's a bum and if he didn't happen to be a god gifted great baseball player, he would be poor and homeless by now. It's good to see that he overcame his problems, but I can't root for guys like that. It's like rooting for Pacman Jones. I don't like guys who would be thugs in the hood if it weren't for sports but since they happened to grow up to be 6'3 and be able to run fast, they are millionaires for life at 18-20ish.

But there is a difference between Jones the proverbial "thug" who goes out and breaks the law and a guy who was so hyped up he got into drugs and damaged his career and life. He is taking the second opportunity he's been given and is running with it, I wish him well.

I don't know all that much about Hamilton, but I rarely hate people, or won't route for them due to drug use. Drug use is stupid, I've never imbibed a non medical drug (including alcohol), so I certainly don't think they are a good thing. But if you want to put something in your body, and ruin your own life, thats fine with me. I get much angrier at idiots like PacMan Jones who endanger others.

All I know is, Josh Hamilton has always been a stud for me in video game baseball, where off the field issues aren't a concern :D

Last I looked, doing drugs is breaking the law too. It can affect many people's lives including his family and anyone that he could have potentially hurt while under mind altering drugs. Thankfully it doesn't seem anything permanant came from it outside of some dumb looking tatoos. I'm not saying I'm not happy for him that he has overcame that obsticle in his life, but I can't root for a guy like that. I don't mean to sound too harsh, I'm simply just stating how I feel on the subject.
