<A class=playerlink href="http://tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=1428">Ed Jovanovski's name is off the free agent shopping list, as the Phoenix Coyotes have signed the veteran blueliner to a five-year contract worth $32.5 million US.
The deal pays him $6.5 million a season.
Jovanovski, 30, tallied 33 points with the Canucks last season despite missing 38 regular season games with a lower abdominal injury.
Jovanovski was drafted first overall by the Florida Panthers in 1994 and played three-and-a-half seasons for the team before being traded to Vancouver in a package for forward Pavel Bure.
In 687 career games with the Canucks and Panthers, Jovanovski has 86 goals and 317 points.

Here's what Spector from foxsports.com has to say on the signing
Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ed Jovanovski today signed a five-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes worth $32.5 million, meaning he'll be paid roughly $6.2 million per season.

Like Chara signing with the Boston Bruins, this one comes as a surprise. It was widely believed the Florida Panthers had the line on Jovanovski, whose off-season home is in Boca Raton and whose close friend Todd Bertuzzi was dealt to the Panthers by the Canucks last week.

It's been quite a while since the Coyotes have plunged this heavily into the UFA market but this move should prove to be a good one. Jovanovski should stabilize the developing Coyotes blueline with his skills and could be looked up on to provide leadership to the younger Phoenix defencemen.

Suffice to say, head coach Wayne Gretzky will probably enjoy his job next season with "Jovocop" patrolling the Coyotes blueline.

Alot of the people on this Coyotes' message board do not like this deal. I can't understand why though. As someone, also on that site, noted Chara is going to make 7.5 million a year and Kubina is going to make $5 million. Putting Jova between the two seem logical to me. Yes it is a ton of money but it is the reality of the NHL free agency this year.

PS, coyoteshockeyfan are you this user on that site? Same name... same birthday.... hhmmmm

Yep, I admit it isnt much of a very original screenname to go by, but it works.

Kind of reminds me of free agency in football. Makes sense to give big $$ to a couple of guys who you really want, and then sit back and bring in the value players in a few days when they realize they aren't getting that big payout.
