Former basketball star Isaiah 'J.R.' Rider accused of kidnapping

Former professional basketball star Isaiah "J.R." Rider, known as much for getting into trouble as his brilliant scoring points, was arrested by Marin County sheriff's deputies early Thursday morning for allegedly kidnapping a female aquaintance in Marin County, authorities said.
Rider, 34, of Alameda, was scheduled to be arraigned today in Marin County Superior Court on charges of kidnapping and battery. Rider, who also faces an outstanding warrant for resisting arrest in Alameda County, was being held at the Marin County Jail on $2 million bail Thursday night.
Sgt. Bruce Baker of the Marin County Sheriff's office said Rider allegedly had an argument with the female acquaintance, and then drove off with her in his Mercedes against her will at around 8 p.m. Wednesday. The woman started screaming, attracting the attention of the police. Rider was arrested early Thursday morning.
The charge is just the latest in the former NBA journeyman's rap sheet.
Rider, who played for five teams from 1994 to 2004, was arrested in November on an outstanding warrant from Marin County, where he was charged with misdemeanor battery against a girlfriend in 2004. His attorney withdrew from the case, arguing that Rider was not cooperating or paying him.
In 1994, he was convicted of assault for kicking a female sports-bar manager at the Mall of America in Minneapolis. He was later jailed for four days after violating his probation. In the NBA, Rider repeatedly ran into trouble for missing practice and team flights.
After becoming a national star at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, he was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he played for three seasons. He was then traded to the Portland Trailblazers where he played for three more. He was then traded to the Atlanta Hawks, played another season for the Los Angeles Lakers and finished his career with the Denver Nuggets.
Rider, who stands 6-foot-5, led the Portland Blazers in scoring in 1998-99.
Rider, who was born in Oakland and went to Encinal High School in Alameda, was still living in Alameda as recently as last year, where he played in a recreational basketball league.
