They took our DB...let's Say---Owwww!

SEAU SAYS "SEE YA" TO SAN DIEGO

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that linebacker Junior Seau has played his last game with the Chargers.

Seau, a 12-year veteran who was taken by the Chargers in the first round of the 1990 draft, has received permission to seek a trade. If no trade materializes, he'll likely be released.

"It's time for us to part ways," Seau said. "There will be some disgruntled people and disgruntled fans, but it was time. I have so many great memories from my time in San Diego, but I look forward to the challenge ahead. I have no regrets about what was done. I wish everyone the best."

Coach Marty Schottenheimer said it was an "organizational decision" to allow the 34-year-old Seau to look for a trade.

"Look, this is not easy for me," Schottenheimer said. "Junior Seau embodies everything you want in a player – work ethic, dedication, passion. But we felt this was something we needed to do, and we wanted to do it right. That's why we extended the courtesy to Junior and his representative to try to see if there's a trade that can be reached."

Translation: If he wasn't one of the most beloved players in the history of the franchise, he would've been tossed in the street like last week's garbage.

Seau said that he already has talked to two teams about a possible trade. Still, it's obvious that Seau doesn't want to leave, especially since the Chargers are building a solid foundation for short-term (and long-term) success.

"There's something hidden between the lines here," Seau said. "It just doesn't make any sense. But there's nothing that I can say that is negative. It's definitely going to be different. But I look forward to carrying on somewhere else."

Class act. Not many players can be so gracious when the plug is pulled prematurely.

In our view, the Chargers will regret this one, especially if they see Seau on the opposing sideline twice in 2003, wearing silver and black.

He might be a nice pickup but he would probably want too much money....

He really hasn't been too effective the last 2 seasons. I think he's lost it. Nevertheless, for low money I'd take him because he'd be a good influence on the young guys and he's got to have something left in the tank.

Agree. He might be worth waiting for till June 1.

However, we still need a pass rusher. That should be the priority.

I would view a signing or trade for Junior in the same vein as Emmitt. You would be acquiring a player for what he has done, not what he can do.

I think our current linebacking corps has enough instensity and desire...no need for another "cheerleader/lockerroom leader" at big money.

Let him go to the Raiders...

Call me a romantic. But - I also view Junior in the same vein as Emmitt and - despite the raised eyebrows it creates - think Junior would be an asset to our defense and the entire team.

He's another one of those "alpha-dogs" I'm always talking about. Like Holliday and Emmitt, maybe Junior becomes another on-the-field position coach who can help our youngsters while he also goes out and helps us win games.

So we've spent some money to bring 2 aging winners onto the roster. I still think it nets out to an overall "plus" to our ballclub in each instance and in both instances.

We've been trying to change the "corporate culture" of the Cardinals and, after 3 or 4 years, haven't really gotten over the hump yet - at best, it's been two steps forward and one step back. The addition of both Seau and Smith could be precisely what the doctor ordered.

I can't say as I agree with the value of the Emmitt Smith's and Junior Seau's as far as being "coaches on the field". Yes some young players "learn" from being around dedicated, hard working, and experienced veterans. But coaching is for coaches, that's why they are hired.

I say the primary factor is the quality of the coach, the inspiration from fellow team mates is more like gravy. For example, Jeff Fitzgerald just completed his 2nd year as linebackers coach. He appears to be a good one. Look at the emergence and development of Ray Thompson last year. I say Fitzgerald and the rest of the coaching staff have far more influence than ANY individual player on younger players.

I saw someone mention awhile back how they thought a poll of players would reveal that a lot of his teammates looked at Boston as kind of a role model because of his body and workout habits. So how many of those guys actually went out and did everything David did to bulk himself up like he did?

Martay Jenkins didn't improve as a receiver because of David Boston. Credit Jerry Sullivan more for that.

Yes it's nice to have dedicated experience around, but the bottom line is....its more important to have good full time actual coaches.

In Seau's case, it appears that some of you may also be either unaware of or glossing over the fact that Seau has often been criticized by team mates of being to much of a me guy, much like Emmitt. Not in the fashion of a Terrell Owens or Keyshawn Johnson, but being more concerned about their own individual performance than that of the team. Seau has a history of over running plays and playing out of control and not with in the system. Makes the highlight films for Junior, but wrecks havoc with the team concept of the whole defense....Kinda like Simian when he was here.

This team does not need Junior Seau.!!!!

Junior Seau may be getting up there at age 34 but even if he has slipped a little and is not as good as he use to be that would still make him twice as good as anyone we have now. I would sign him to a three year deal for 3mil a year and be happy to have him. He is a sideline to sideline player, hits like a mack truck and is very good in coverage. Yea he's not a kid anymore but he can still play near a probowl level another couple of years.

Yup. Ask the Raiders how these type of players have panned out for them.

I agree, the Raiders have done quite well. If signing a Seau and a Hugh Douglas can get the Cards in the Superbowl then I say get them signed.
