Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, "Jupiter Ascending" is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since "The Matrix" Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

My brother saved me from this mess. My son wanted to see this but I guess this films is a complete and utter mess. The visuals are spectacular but everything from the plot, the script and editing is downright schizophrenic.

Why do studios continue to give the Wachowskis money? This is going to be a complete financial disaster. Could this kill the rumored Matrix sequels?

I can't imagine anybody bankrolling a big project for them again.

Man. All these movies that look good are getting bad reviews. I'll watch this with the wife so she can see Channing and I can see Mila

I think I was saved by divine intervention. I was going to watch this at 4pm for the matinee price, but Fandango had it listed as a 2D showing and it was in 3D. I don't do 3D, so I didn't see it. Now I'm thinking it was a blessing, this mistake lol

A Brief History of Jupiter Ascending’s Plagued Journey to the Big Screen

http://time.com/3693643/jupiter-ascending-production-story/

It’s never a good sign when a summer blockbuster starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum’s abs is pushed from July to February, a historically bad month for movies. But the move from summer to this inauspicious season convinced some readers long before the critics had filed their reviews that the Andy and Lana Wachowski film is sure to be a flop.

Since the stunning success of The Matrix 15 years ago, the Wachowskis have produced lackluster box office numbers. Both Speed Racer in 2008 and Cloud Atlas in 2012 were critical and commerical disappointments. Now, like Cloud Atlas before it, Jupiter Ascending’s bad reputation precedes it. Reports of its ballooning budget (from $150 to $175 million) and rumors of re-edits after test audiences said they could not understand the plot have plagued the movie in the seven months since it was originally set to hit theaters.

Warner Bros. has attempted to explain away Jupiter Ascending‘s move by pointing to the success of 2013’s Gravity, which also got a delayed release. But Gravity was given a prestigious October release date (where many Oscar-bait films are slated) and eventually won director Alfonso Cuarón an Oscar. Meanwhile, audience members reportedly walked out of a surprise screening of Jupiter Ascending at Sundance last month.

Here's one review that caught my eye:

JUPITER ASCENDING Review
BY MATT GOLDBERG

http://collider.com/jupiter-ascending-review/

There’s enough nuttiness swimming around inside Jupiter Ascending that I can almost appreciate its braggadocio. There’s only one other recent film I can think of that would be so outlandish in its sci-fi style, and that’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Except Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t explain every damn thing that happens. Yondu doesn’t take five minutes to tell us how Ravagers function in the galaxy. We don’t get a long history of Groot’s species. The film doesn’t grind to a halt as one character gives us Rocket’s entire biography. The highly successful and incredibly entertaining Marvel film happily speeds along, and it trusts you to keep up. Rather than get bogged down in the surroundings, it lets the characters express the tone and allows us take in the scenery.

Sadly, I did end up watching it. What a pile of crap. You could have called it Jupiter Descending, because all she did was keep falling--over and over and over again. Also, how weak can you make your leading lady? They made her stupid and helpless, needing saved by men over and over and over again. What a shambles of a movie.

$120 Million Loss

“There’s a reason you’re seeing more sequels, prequels and known properties because you never know how films like Tomorrowland or Jupiter Ascending are going to turn out,” says Handler. Jupiter was a pricey miss for Warners, Village Roadshow and other partners who paid nearly $180 million to make the sci-fi fantasy, which topped out at $181.9 million worldwide and lost about $120 million all-in.

Don't write absolute crap, and maybe you'll make money. This was ALL in the script. It tried to promote a strong female lead while writing a weak, whining, absolutely idiotic female lead character. Kunis didn't have a chance to act herself out of the atrocious script. The visuals were good, the actors were good (main villain also had to deal with a terrible script), but the writing was bad, including all the falling (NOT ascending!).
