Factors in the decision:

No Madden on PC this year (shakes fist)!

360's epic hardware failure rate indicative of Microsoft's "money first" policy.

Built in Wireless.

Free online service (suck it, Live).

Format war is over.

........

So I picked up GTA4 and the Resident Evil trilogy.
Any must haves out there?

Blurays?

So far in the year I have owned it, that there hasn't been an "must have exclusive" PS3 title for me.

Congrats on your purchase.

Hardware works great for me, first xbox lasted four years.
Online gaming sucks wireless, lots of lag.
Free online loaded with lag and bad features, 50 bucks a year is chump change.

I'm sure you will enjoy your purchase, just couldnt see myself owning one over a 360, ever.

I was a sony fanboy prior to 360 too.

I won't say that there is no use. I haven't "gamed" on it in months though. I use it for Bluray/DVD watching.

I won't pay $40. I don't know many who would. You can get them for the same prices as DVDs if you look. The most I spent on any one of my titles was $25 (after $10 gift card) for Lost Season 3.

Yep. I owned PS and PS2. PS3 major disappointment if you were not using as a Blu Ray player. Was much more expensive at launch, no leap in graphics to the 360 (in some cases games look worse on PS3), smaller game library and compared to Xbox Live Sony's online experience sucks.

The format war for High Definition DVD's might be over in Sony's favor but IMO the gaming console is over in favor of MS. No way that the PS3 catches up. Even Sony's HALO (GTA Franchise) was a bigger hit on the 360. Over 67% of all GTA4 sales are on the 360.

These things are cyclical though. I learned a long time ago not to be loyal to any one manufacturer. You end up getting crushed. I will do what I do every generation. I will get the best gaming machine no matter who makes it.

I agree about cyclical though. Nintendo might be on top again next generation. :)

I doubt it, Nintendo is far too gimmicky and not interested in the fully immersed gaming experience. The casual gamer is a big market but not what drives the industry.

Nintendo has always been about profit first. I'm ok with that. It ensures we have Nintendo for the long haul.

I pretty much guarantee that Nintendo's next machine will support HD. Their online matchmaking still leaves a lot to be desired, but it is still better than Playstation.

Man , I totally agree with everything you said there. I purchased a PS3 about 3 months ago, mainly for the blue ray and love it for that reason. I have played a couple of games on it (Resistance and Burnout Paradise) but I find myself back on the 360. Live is awesome,

NOw that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to the 360, my desire to own a PS3 has decreased to 0. I won't mock anyone's decision on either system, both are great to own though.

My dad got me a PS3. What is the difference between a PS2 and PS3?

Right. Surprised one of the techies didn't bite on this first.

There are a number of large differences, the foremost being graphical power.
Even if you don't own a high definition television the difference in the look of the games will be significant. If you're lucky enough to own said TV the difference is extraordinary.

Secondly, the PS3 is slowly being built up to be a media center as well as a gaming console. With its built in Hard Drive you'll be able to add movies, music, and sandwiches to the PS3 and access them whenever you want.

The PS3 can read Blu-ray discs, which are a type of disc that can hold around double the amount of a DL DVD. The larger space means that movies and games can be in HD. It can also work as a DVD player, replacing a player on your rack if you want.

The PS3 works best if you have it hooked up to an active internet connection, so you can get updates from the company as they improve and add onto the system, but if you don't you can still add downloads via USB storage device.

The PS3 also has wireless controllers, which is the greatest freedom a gamer can have, but they're blue-tooth driven and the PS3 is without an IR sensor, so if you watch movies on it then you'll either have to use a control, or PS3's propriatary remote control.

And most of what I said their applies to xbox 360 as well, just with a higher hardware failure rate, but a much better online matchmaking system.

I just bought a near mint played a few times 80gig PS3 for $340 on ebay...

I have the 42in 1080p LCD... HD-DVD player.. brand new receiver with HDaudio decoding... and now finally a bluray player....

Pretty pumped about it... I'm a 360 user, so I dont know if I'll be gaming on it.. but it will be nice to get blurays now that HD-DVDs are no longer being made

I have 2 PS3's.

Had an XBOX 360 until I decided to switch last October.

The first one I bought quit working after about 5 weeks, but I sent it back to Sony. Since it was around the holidays, it took forever, so I bought a second one in the meantime. Then, Sony sent me back a broken one. Sent that one back and now I have two working PS3's.

Although I had issues, Sony is quick and easy to get things resolved, granted you can get through on the phone. During heavy times, they don't take incoming calls.

Really though, I am happy. SOCOM CONFRONTATION is coming out in October (the real reason I bought them), and M.A.G. looks pretty sweet. I've played COD4 online, and never experienced any lag with wireless internet, that is a myth.

BTW, I had to send my 360 back twice as well.

Congrats on getting a PS3. It's pointless to argue with the 360 peeps. Just like Mac/Windows, Ford/Chevy/Dodge, Blu Ray/HD DVD, Beta/VHS, everyone has one they prefer, and are too stubborn to give both a try.

In the end, I think you'll enjoy your PS3, especially if you watch Planet Earth in HD and when SOCOM comes out if you're into that kinda thing.

I have yet to try the online play. The only games I have are GTA 4, Metal Solid 4 and Pro Evolution Soccer. I think I may play some footie on the telly once I am tired of playing the league matches. Should be soon.

Thanks... I bought my xbox on ebay years ago and it worked amazing, so hopefully i'll have the same good luck with ps3 haha
I bought my PS3 a couple months ago and have no complaints....especially with the online gig. I play online ALOT(Resistence:Fall of Man)and have only experienced a few dropped games.I've been a Playstation user for many years & for me the only real reason i never went for the X-box is simple....but probably the most important element in gaming (for me)which is the controller. I hate the Microsoft controller and the dualshock has always felt better. Each has it's pro's & con's but the choice for me to go Sony PS2/PS3 was that simple really.
and the blue-ray factor.

did you read many of the posts or are u assuming that you cant argue with 360 people? several of us said we own both and like both but the xbox is just way better online. live arcade is also way better which is a main point for me, I spend more time in arcade than on games I buy at the store.

PS3 better graphics, blue ray
xbox 360 better online. period. I am an online gamer.

PS: the ps3's organization pisses me off, if you have downloaded map packs for COD4 on both systems you will understand my annoyance, ps3 makes you do that with everything, dl it, find it, install it, all taking time to do. xbox you push one thing and it is all done immediatly.
