by continually trading down over and over till the end of round two, here is what this one mock draft got us. Now, we wouldn't have gotten any recognized as round 1 picks, but look at all the good players we did get. My question to myself would be, knowing that with one pick in each of 7 rounds, usually you would net you maybe 3 guys who made and stuck with your team past the first year and either started or played to any degree, would your odds go way up if you drafted intelligently and had 20-30 late 2nd-7th round picks instead.

Knowing so many pro bowlers were mid-late round picks and how many 1st round busts there are, I can't help but wonder wouldn't a gob of picks raise your percentage of acquiring starting players. Sure you might miss on even a higher percentage, but you would make it up easily in numbers. When I think about how good Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick have been at recognizing late round talent, some how it makes sense. Any way, here is the draft I did by just parlaying our 1st and 2nd round picks by moving back a couple spots or more each time it came to our pick:

Round 2 Pick 28 (CAR): Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame (B+)
Round 2 Pick 31 (DEN): Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois (A)
Round 2 Pick 32 (SEA): Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina (B+)
Round 3 Pick 1 (HOU): Kyle Van Noy, OLB, Brigham Young (A)
Round 3 Pick 4 (ATL): Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State (A-)
Round 3 Pick 9 (BUF): Marcus Martin, C, Southern California (B)
Round 3 Pick 26 (IND): Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State (A)
Round 3 Pick 29 (N.E.): Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise State (A-)
Round 3 Pick 30 (S.F.): JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee (B+)
Round 3 Pick 31 (DEN): Keith McGill, CB, Utah (A-)
Round 4 Pick 14 (JAX): Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin (A)
Round 4 Pick 16 (MIA): Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU (A)
Round 4 Pick 20: Ahmad Dixon, SS, Baylor (B-)
Round 4 Pick 26 (N.O.): Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee (A)
Round 4 Pick 27 (CLE): Marqueston Huff, FS, Wyoming (C)
Round 4 Pick 28 (CAR): Kadeem Edwards, OG, Tennessee State (D-)
Round 4 Pick 30 (N.E.): Jon Halapio, OG, Florida (C)
Round 4 Pick 31 (DEN): John Urschel, OG, Penn State (F)
Round 5 Pick 1 (HOU): Trey Millard, FB, Oklahoma (D-)
Round 5 Pick 6 (SEA): Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami (Fla.) (C)
Round 5 Pick 20: Chris Boswell, K, Rice (B+)
Round 5 Pick 28 (CAR): Steven Clark, P, Auburn (D-)
Round 6 Pick 20: Zach Hocker, K, Arkansas (F)
Round 6 Pick 27 (IND): Jeff Janis, WR, Saginaw Valley (B-)
Round 6 Pick 28 (CAR): Marion Grice, RB, Arizona State (A)
Round 7 Pick 4 (OAK): Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon (F)
Round 7 Pick 11 (STL): Denicos Allen, OLB, Michigan State (A)
Round 7 Pick 26 (STL): Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma (C)
Round 7 Pick 27 (S.F.): Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas (D+)
Round 7 Pick 29 (N.E.): Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech (F)
Round 7 Pick 31 (DEN): Ty Zimmerman, FS, Kansas State (E)

Whatever the case, this might be the deepest draft ever. Those teams with lots of picks should improve greatly next year and beyond. Yikes regarding the Niners and Rams.

I'd love to hear who you're cutting to put even half those rooks on our roster. ;)

Hey SBF, is this the website you used for the trading frenzy? http://www.first-pick.com/Default.aspx

I LOVE the idea of trading down and far more than once but that's crazy over kill.

I think SK can hit on more mid and late round picks than most GM's so yeah, trade down several times.

This is what happens when you realize that it is still freaking 2 months to the draft, which is also the most anticlimactic event in sports. I cannot help it, the draft gets me going every year and then in a matter of days it is done and there is like nothing till opening season lol
I suggest you get a cold one SBF, and do a poll on favorite drink of choice during a game :)

Yes, I do use that one, but I refuse to accept the most ludicrous trade offers. I actually consult the value charts and either accept one that is relatively decent or simply pick and go to the next pick and look at those trades. It would be great though if that site would change their trading options to what corresponds to true trade value. Would be so easy to fix it to make it more real and fun.

LOL.

Well done.

That is, in fact, kinda interesting. Crazy but interesting none the less.

Gregg Easterbrook wrote years ago that the flaw with the trade value chart is that a Top 5 pick in the draft is valued the same as like the entire 4th round. Every head coach and general manager in the league would rather have an entire round's worth of picks than a single elite prospect.

A couple of people pointed out the problem with having a 30-member draft class. Still, kind of an interesting exercise. I'm of the belief that we're probably two above-average starters away from being a playoff team than 10 depth players, so this approach doesn't have a ton of appeal to me.

You would really have to be able to spot the good ones from the bad ones really really quick because a vast majority of those picks would be cut before you played one regular season game. I'm curious how many mid round players that ended up being pro bowlers were deemed to have that potential right out of the gate and how many took a couple of years before they got there.

What kills me with this site is that a team will trade up and immediately trade that pick. Never ever happens in the real draft but several of these take place in every draft on this site.

Having said that I have run a bunch of drafts on this site because it is fun and helps me with retaining draftees names etc.

For the 2012 draft there were 6 Pro Bowlers taken in the first round.
There was one from the second round and two from the third. There were none in the fourth and fifth but three in the sixth. Of those three, one was a kicker and one a special teamer (Justin Bethel)

For 2013 there were 3 (all taken after pick 17) in the first round and 1 in the second.

That's only two years but I am still going to assume that you have a much better shot of getting a Pro Bowl caliber player in the first round then you do later on.
