The cynic in me wonders if he knew about this injury and that is why he was considering retirement, only to be pulled back in by the organization...

You don't trade a 5th for a Guard because someone has a "stinger".

Especially when you already have Murray, Hayes, Smith and Harlow.

A stinger is normally a 2 week injury.

That is not true at all. Stingers are all over the place and seeing a specialist means there is most likely some nerve damage of somesort. It usually mean lack of feeling in limbs, which is important for someone on the OL.

Or maybe they saw an opportunity for depth with a high reward low risk factor, which also is one of Kyler's boys. Now if we would have burned a pick for him with something more than a fifth, then I would have a reason to be a bit disenchanted with the trade

And Kliff clearly said injuries was why the trade was made.

“We see (Ford) playing inside with the ability in a pinch to play tackle,” Kingsbury said, via Darren Urban of the team website. “With our injuries, we felt like it was a position where we could get some more depth

I may be wrong but I think Ford can play some tackle as well.
