It went largely unnoticed in the end, but it was surely intentional on the part of Justin Rose. As he strode to the first tee at Royal Troon on Sunday, hoping to end one of British sport’s most baffling curses and become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1992 to lift the Claret Jug, eagle-eyed observers noticed he was wearing virtually the same outfit he had been when he famously made his Open debut as a fresh-faced 17 year-old amateur at Royal Birkdale in 1997.
