Umm, I'm not an MLB follower, but can anyone explain how this is even a discussion? He has nice stats but is not at the top of the list in AVG, HRs, RBIS, SB's or anything. Couple top 10's but no top 5's.

It's not... just like Kennedy is not in the running for the Cy Young. However, both will be in the top 4 or 5 in voting.

All in fun, more of a poke at the dissapointment thread.

Because alot of those guys who are piling up stats are on teams that have been eliminated since June. Usually, but not always, the MVP comes from a playoff contending team. It could be argued that Upton is more valuable to his team's success than any other NL player. Some voters do take that into consideration when casting their ballots.

My guess is Prince Fielder will get the MVP, but Upton will be in the conversation.

It's an old question but is very relevant this season. Should a guy like Matt Kemp be voted MVP even though his team is out of contention?

Unless he is having a far superior year to anyone, no.

This is a new century, Lefty. Different faces, different circumstances. Anyone but Melvin or A.J. Hinch.

Who is to say that Chip Hale wouldn't have brought a championship to the D'backs at the Major League level as he did at the Minor League level? And as Gibby is working toward.

Now if he would just take some action against the Strikeout and PopUp kings occupying two of the first four spots in the batting order.

There is still work to be done.

At this moment, Upton leads the team in the following categories:

Hits
Runs
Doubles
Triples
Home Runs
RBI
Stolen Bases
OBP
SLG %
OPS
Batting Average

There isn't another player on this team that is within shouting distance of Upton's ability and impact on this team!
That type of drop off in talent is scary. Hopefully, Towers can find ways to pick up some key pieces to complete this puzzle.

I just wish that our MVP candidate weren't such a flake. Tonight he let a fly ball pop out of his mitt for an error -- his team leading 11th of the season.

An outfielder leading his team in errors!

Earlier in this series, he threw the ball way over the head of his cutoff man and offline for another error.

If he is truly going to be the best on our team, he needs to start concentrating and showing substance along with glory.

His lapses detract from his overall performance and take away as much from the team as his hot spurts add to it.

You make a valid point or two on Upton but this ISN'T one of them. There is no way in the world that his negatives come anywhere close to offsetting his value to this club. Take him off this team and replace him with an average player and this team is battling for the cellar not a playoff spot. Personally, I think you're so fixated on the guy that you've perhaps forgotten that there are no perfect players. He's got room to improve, sure, but the improvement he's shown/showing is incredible.

Why in the world would you take him off the team and replace him with an average player? The expectations come from where he was drafted and his potential. He is a stud with an amazing upside, but he needs to apply basic baseball fundamentals to his game. I have seen great improvement in that respect, and if he continues...well he may be one of the game's greats.

The plusses are plusses and the minuses are minuses. In this same game, instead of running down a fly ball (nowhere near the stands), he slid (which slowed him down) then it bounced off his arm while he was parallel to the ground.

Later in this same game he dived on a ball which landed in front of him and it rolled past him, instead of catching it on a bounce.

Is it fair to say that, as a fan, I would like to see him stop the constant showboating? I'm "fixating" on my team because I want to see them win. Not down 5-1 to the lowly Astros after moving into 1st place.

For the past few games, Upton has been a liability in RF, and there is no reason for that.

Upton can't win with you. He dove for that ball and missed and he sucks. He plays it on a bounce and you will say he is lazy. We understand you don't like Upton. You have made it perfectly clear.

Whenever I see your name as a post I can pretty much guarantee it is bashing Upton for being terrible or Young for being a guy who doesn't care because he sucks on his necklace. It is really annoying.

I think you might be arguing a different point here than I am. I'm not talking about expectations nor am I discussing whether some aspects of Upton's game can be considered a disappointment. I'm challenging the statement that his lapses have cost the team as much as his spurts have helped the team. IMO, he's hurt us in a small handful of games and carried us in a whole bunch of them.

Upton needs to lay out the next pitcher that hits him. This is getting ridiculous.

Can't though. The last thing you need in a pennant race is your star player getting suspended for a few games.

But I know what you mean.
