The Detroit Tigers lost 4-3 to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday in the second of two exhibition games at Oracle Park in San Francisco, the final tune-up before the regular season.
Opening Day is Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Justyn-Henry Malloy, who started in left field, put the Tigers ahead, 1-0, with a solo home run to center field against right-hander Jordan Hicks in the second inning. The 25-year-old hit the ball 409 feet with a 102.3 mph exit velocity.
It was Malloy's first home run since the beginning of spring training, but he hit .309 (17-for-55) with five walks and 12 strikeouts across 22 games leading up to the regular season.
He finished 1-for-4 with one homer in Tuesday's game.
Malloy is competing for one of the final spots on the Opening Day roster, with a few other players in the mix: Spencer Torkelson, Ryan Kreidler and Jahmai Jones.
There's a good chance the Tigers don't finalize their roster until Thursday.
Right-hander Jackson Jobe started for the Tigers.
The 22-year-old allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts across four innings, throwing 45 of 68 pitches for strikes. He walked leadoff hitter Mike Yastrzemski on five pitches in the third inning, then served up a two-run home run to Tyler Fitzgerald, who blasted a middle-middle 95.4 mph fastball to left field.
THREE CF INJURIES: What Tigers will — and won't — do after losing three center fielders to injuries
Although Jobe still needs to develop as a pitcher, he showed encouraging signs by generating nine misses on 35 swings for an average 25.7% whiff rate. His fastball averaged 96.3 mph, but it generated just one whiff on 14 swings.
His changeup was his best pitch.
Jobe is locked in as part of the Tigers' five-man rotation.
The Tigers tacked on one run apiece in the sixth and eighth innings.
In the sixth, Jake Rogers drew a leadoff walk.
Then a single from Zach McKinstry — after right-handed reliever Joel Peguero took over on the mound — advanced Rogers to third base, and he scored on an ensuing sacrifice fly from Riley Greene.
In the seventh, three consecutive singles from Rogers, Andrew Navitago and Manuel Margot against right-handed reliever Camilo Doval trimmed the Tigers' deficit to 4-3.

Hicks, who started for the Giants, allowed two runs on three his and one walk with three strikeouts across five innings, throwing 63 pitches. His fastball averaged 97.9 mph, maxing out at 99.5 mph. Malloy, Kerry Carpenter and Javier Báez had the three hits against him.
After Jobe, the Tigers used right-hander Casey Mize and right-handed reliever Kenta Maeda.
Mize, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick, allowed two runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts across three innings, throwing 34 of 47 pitches for strikes. The 27-year-old generated a whopping 11 misses on 23 swings for an elite 47.8% whiff rate.
He racked up those whiffs with his entire six-pitch mix: five sliders, one sinker, one four-seamer one splitter, two sweepers and one curveball. His fastball averaged 94.8 mph.
MONDAY'S GAME: Tigers' Riley Greene crushes home run into McCovey Cove in 6-4 loss in exhibition
Mize, though, allowed two runs in the seventh inning after issuing a two-out walk to Fitzgerald on six pitches. From there, he gave up back-to-back hits that led to the two runs. He posted a 1.89 ERA with eight walks and 25 strikeouts over 19 innings in six games since the beginning of spring training.
As for the eighth inning, Maeda retired all three batters he faced, including strikeouts of Wade Meckler and Brett Auerbach. He struck out Auerbach swinging with an up-and-in 91.8 mph fastball.
Mize is a part of the Tigers' five-man rotation.
