Underrated list:

1. Marbury
2. Mashburn
3. Bobby Jackson
4. Kirilenko
5. Jason Williams

Overrated list:

1. Stackhouse
2. Abdur-Rahim
3. Szczerbiak
4. Bibby
5. Antwan Jamison

It looks like I'm not the only one who feels that Shareef Abdur-Rahim is overrated. I also agree that Marbury, Mashburn, and maybe even Jason Williams are underrated. Bobby Jackson isn't underrated though. Last season they were talking about him as an All-Star before he was injured. Kirilenko has been touted as one of the top sixth man in the NBA. That's what he is. So far he hasn't shown he is much more.

BTW where is Antoine Walker on that second list? :)

Walker should be on the overrated list, and I think Francis and Carter could find their way there.

Chap, I'm not sure if that smiling face means you were joking about Vince Carter being overrated, so this isn't necessarily directed at you. I don't think Vince Carter is overrated at all. The only way he could possibly be considered overrated is because of all of the stupid Canadian fans that vote him into the All-Star game each year. Otherwise everybody and their mom knows exactly what Vince Carter is... a very, very good player with the injury problems. I don't think anybody out there is denying that.

That's overrating him, IMO. Vince Carter is not a very, very good player. He's a good player, but nowhere near the superstar the league (and you it appears) make him out to be.

So you think Vince Carter was a superstar or damn close to it when he was healthy? In his second and third seasons in the NBA he averaged 26 points on 46.3% shooting , 3.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. He also shot almost 41% from the three-point line those seasons. He was also probably the most exciting player in the league at that point. I would say if he wasn't a superstar then he was well on his way.

I won't argue that he was on his way, but he was clearly the best player on a pretty bad team--and even then that's not saying much.

Take Allen Iverson for instance. He is definitely a superstar, and that is with a halfway decent team behind him. Vince, however, has never had a great team behind him. I think it's unfortunate, because he seems like a great person, but I can think of several other players that would be considered bigger "superstars" than Vince Carter.

He's on a bad team now, but in 2001 he was a missed jump shot away from the Eastern conference finals. Ironically that's the year Allen Iverson was the MVP and took the 76ers to the NBA finals. Vince Carter was every bit the superstar Allen Iverson was that season in my opinion.

I agree. I remember Carter hitting about 5 game-winning last-second shots that year. He was pretty close to being unstoppable.

He had it all going for him.

Then, the injuries starting to take their turn and Tracy McGrady arrived. The attention soon waned off Carter, and it's been downhill since.

I remember how good Carter was, but he is just a shadow of that player now.

Remember how we were all trying to figure out how to get Carter to the Suns to play with Kidd after his contract ran out?

I remember being excited draft time - with talks about Steve Nash traded in package deal for Vince Carter, I believe another year also (not his draft year) about McGrady deal with Steve Nash while McGrady was in Toronto...

I was only around the last year of Sunsbackcourt.com, then AZProSports etc and didn't post much and don't know remember where read those deals (possibly AZ Republic or aol sports message boards) but I was excited.

First, I will concede to you fellas about Carter being a superstar a few years ago...

Secondly, I don't remember talking about Vince Carter in a Suns uniform (let alone Tracy McGrady) at all.

I do remember some discussion, but it was hardly unanimous. There were a lot of people who either (a) didn't want Carter, or (b) recognized that there was almost no chance he would leave Toronto.

The year that Steve Nash was traded to Dallas there was apparently serious talk of him going to Toronto for Vince Carter (I believe he was a rookie at that point, but I didn't check). Before his injuries that would have looked like a big-time steal.

The Tracy McGrady talk was later the summer that he was a free-agent. We ALL discussed the possibility of trade that would have sent Shawn Marion & salary to the raptors for McGrady. These possibilities were also discussed several times by the national media. Many of us did not want to trade Shawn Marion, but looking back it would have been a great trade.

Well, I don't remember being part of that, but I guess whatever you say... I don't even remember even thinking that much about Tracy until well after he went to Orlando.

I remember thinking that giving McGrady a max contract would prove to be one of the biggest blunders in league history for a player who wasn't a center. I was completely skeptical about McGrady and thought he had no business commanding that kind of money. I don't remember any discussion about a Marion trade, but if there was any, I'm sure I was against it.

Of course, I was wrong about McGrady, but at least I can fess up to it. :p
