Dorell seems to have lost the wrong games.

Boise State's Chris Petersen, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and former NFL coach Steve Mariucci have already been contacted by UCLA about the job, the Los Angeles Times said.

DeWayne Walker will be the Bruins' interim coach for the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22.

Expectations were high for Dorrell's 2007 team. They were ranked in the top 20 of almost every preseason poll. They were up to No. 11 on The Associated Press
poll before losing 44-6 by Utah on Sept. 15. Then they lost to a winless Notre Dame, which brought concern from high-end program donors, the Times said.

The Bruins went on to lose three Pacific-10 Conference games, sealing Dorrell's future.

I think it was more the way they lost. Every year they'd win a game or two they shouldn't have won, and lose several they should have won, some embarassingly like the utah game.

That was the game that probably sealed his fate he had so many returning starters this year to collapse like that even with QB injuries was hard to defend. Notre Dame was easier to handle they were playing a walkon QB the whole game, but Utah was a complete collapse.

Former Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr., Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe and Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly are also on UCLA's radar in the search for Karl Dorrell's successor, sources said. Dorrell was fired Monday, after five seasons at his alma mater. -- LA Daily News

Is this a job worth having? Or can UCLA only attract retreads?

After all, this is a hoops school, in a football conference, where USC, Cal, ASU, and the NW schools will make it hard to win at UCLA.

The real problem is UCLA is public so they don't pay a competitive Salary. With Howland they had to get a lot of things rolling to up his salary and realistically he'll be underpaid very shortly again.

I'm reading Chow will interview, Neuheisel has interest, Leach is probably not going to interview although the people who like him are really pushing for him.

Retread doesn't always mean bad, Erickson sure worked out for ASU this year. The main thing is UCLA has to now follow through and show they want to get better at football. Dorrell upped the academics, he was a pretty classy guy, he beat USC, but he didn't win enough to keep the job. So you fire a guy over wins and losses you better replace him with a better coach.

UCLA doesn't pay for football coaches, their boosters will pay for hoops but that's about it. It's a basketball-school mindset (of which I'm very familiar with), spend at all costs to keep up hoops program yet go cheap with football while expecting ther results of a football school. It doesn't work that way unless you're getting financial donations in the Ohio State, Texas, or Florida territory.

Leach is making around $2 mil in Lubbock, taking that paycut and going from low to high in cost of living is flat out dumb. Chow is a joke, he's been passed over at Stanford, NC State, BYU, Arizona, and ASU. Slick Rick can coach but he's got baggage.
