Sunday’s running of the 2025 Bakersfield Marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 6K race events brings together approximately 4,000 runners, numerous race officials, volunteers and fans cheering on the competitors.
But running an event that covers up to 26.2 miles also creates temporary disruptions for public transportation routes, road closures around the city and requires everyone to exhibit patience.
The start and finish line for all races is at the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave. in Bakersfield. The race begins at 7 a.m. with runners heading east. Closed streets will begin reopening as the last runners pass through the intersections. Police officers and course monitors will help people cross the course during runner gaps.
Marathon officials have created four designated zones where street closures will occur, some starting as early as 4 and 5 a.m. Sunday and some closed until at least 2 p.m. Times may vary slightly based on the pace of the race.
Zone 2 (4 a.m. to 2 p.m. street closures): 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 30th, A and C streets, California Avenue, Chester Avenue, Cypress Street, Chester Lane, Dracena, Elm, F, H and Oak streets, Oleander Avenue, Palm Street, Park Way and Westwind Drive.
Zone 3 (5 to 10 a.m., street closures): Acacia Avenue, Alta Vista, El Cerrito, Manor, Monte Vista, Panorama, Pasatiempo, River Boulevard, Union Avenue, W. Columbus Street.
Zone 4 (5 to 9 a.m. street closures): Alfred Harrell Highway, Amherst Street, Church Avenue, Eton Street, Haley Street, Harmony Drive, Mount Vernon Avenue, Panorama Drive, Radcliff Avenue and Wenatchee Avenue.
Zone 1 (8 a.m. to noon): Kern River Parkway only (bike path).
