Arizona VP of player personnel Steve Keim has entered into negotiations to become the Cardinals' next GM. Also a finalist in Jacksonville.

Keim, Cardinals negotiating

Posted by Mike Florio Profootballtalk.com

Eight days in to the 2013 offseason, and no new General Managers have been hired.

That could change soon.

Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the Cardinals and director of player personnel Steve Keim currently are negotiating a deal that would make Keim the in-house successor to Rod Graves.

It has been widely believed that Keim would ascend to the top job in Arizona, where the Cardinals also are in the process of hiring a new head coach. Keim also is believed to be a finalist for the G.M. job in Jacksonville.

The other teams currently searching for new General Managers are the Jets, Chiefs, and Browns.

Good... Can't believe Graves is gone... Addition by subtraction.

Nice to hear is name mentioned but there's very little in the 2 reports we didn't already know (i.e. Cards are considering him; they're "talking", Jacksonville another option).

First I've heard that they were negotiating with him, meaning he will be our next GM.

About time. If one gets a GM to run the team's direction (as most do when they intend to have a football savvy mind in office and not basically a check signer as Grave), it only makes sense to have him in place so he can help determine your coach.

I wish I could be excited about this.

I want to be.

There is just a question in the back of my mind....was it Keim who thought Snyder, Colledge, Michael Floyd, etc., etc., etc. or someone else ?

THAT is what bothers me about all this.

Yet, I temper that with the fact that Keim is going to be doing a "different job" then in the past, so who knows.

I am comfortable with Keim as GM. Just...............ah, you know, it being the Cardinals and all it always is an anxiety ridden situation with them.

Geez, what do you guy want in a GM? Is it a scout, isn't that his experience? You could argue that he "scouting" of our present QB's and offensive lineman suck.

So what now makes him qualified for the key spot selecting all organizational positions plus contracts plus capology plus keeping me happy?

Bring me giants!

Ugh. Not exactly the fresh set of eyes needed to revamp roster.

I agree with you on your concerns, I also have them. I do recall over the years that Keim was considered excellent on his evaluation of college players for the draft. I also heard that Graves never looked at film on players. Finally, we have HC Whisenhunt who got control over personnel decisions. So who called the shots???
Bottom line it does create an anxiety ridden situation that you suggest:D

I hear ya. Keim could end up being a great GM for the Cards, but after following the team for the last 30 years it's hard for me to get excited by the promoting of someone from within.

All I've heard about Keim is that he wanted AP over Levi, but got shot down in the draft room. If that is true, then that is all the proof I need that he wasn't responsible for our draft mistakes.

Not exactly, if he scouted those lineman and gave his list but Whis and Graves ignored those on the top of his list at the QB and OL position. The team then went with his later suggestions because all his top guys he rated where gone by the time the team turned their attention to those areas.

Who the hell really knows what his call was on any player. All I know for sure is that once he started to get more power the drafts got better briefly. Then Whiz got more power and the drafts got pretty suspect. I think the guy deserves a shot. There is no super strong willed high profile named GM coming in here.

Which drafts are you referring to the Keim had success?

I sure wish I knew whether Keim was hanging with Mikey when the Cards met with McCoy or not. If so, I'd say Keim is the man, and we have a better shot at bringing McCoy here. If not, I'd still say Keim is the man, and, McCoy probably thinks we're crazy in Arizona for trying to get an OC before we have a GM. But with Mikey calling for radio silence, that kind of dish doesn't appear to have been reported.

He wasn't responsible for THAT draft mistake.

We don't know about any others. That said, I hope we sign him.
