Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham hopped into the NFL Network booth at Big 12 Pro Days with Rhett Lewis and Daniel Jeremiah on Wednesday.
He shared what makes ASU's 2024 breakout star Cam Skattebo who he is.
"He's so competitive," Dillingham said. "He's so competitive that everything he does, he's going to want to do it full speed. He's going to want to do it with a passion."
In his last season with the Sun Devils, Skattebo won Offensive MVP of the Peach Bowl (a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game) despite vomiting on the sideline during the game. He puked and rallied his way to 143 rushing yards and two rushing scores, 99 receiving yards and a 42-yard passing touchdown.
"He's going to want to be the very best," Dillingham said. "I think that's the thing. There's competitive people, and then there's people who want to be the best at everything. They want to be the center of everything."
Skattebo ran for 1,711 rushing yards on 293 carries in 2024 (5.8 yards per attempt) and 21 rushing touchdowns. He caught 45 passes for 605 yards and three receiving scores.
"The contact balance, the grit," Dillingham said. "All that stuff is what separates him, and I just can't wait. Some team is going to draft him. Some fan base is going to get really excited about drafting him. And there's going to be a lot of jerseys sold and a lot of touchdowns had."
Much discussion has been had (and particularly on NFL Network) regarding what the professional comparison is for Skattebo. Dillingham's comp for Skattebo is Maurice Jones-Drew, the nine-year NFL running back who was named first-team All-Pro in 2011 when he led the NFL in rushing (1,606 rush yards).
Jones-Drew was a Day 2 draft pick, taken in the second round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Skattebo is projected by some to be a Day 2 or Day 3 pick. Regardless, Jeremiah does not even know if he has seen a prospect like him.
"This kid, he just chooses violence," Jeremiah told NFL reporters in February. "I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more aggressive runner who just seeks out contact and can absorb contact. ... Whoever gets him is going to have one of the most aggressive and physical runners that we’ve seen in the last few years. He’s a fun one."
