D-Backs reportedly call up pitcher Jarvis
By Jack Magruder, Tribune
May 19, 2006
The Diamondbacks apparently plan to add Kevin Jarvis to the list of candidates for their Sunday start against Atlanta.
Jarvis started for Triple-A Tucson against Round Rock on Thursday, but was removed after 1 innings because he was to be sent to the D-Backs, according to a report on the Sidewinders’ Web site after the game.
The D-Backs needed Claudio Vargas in relief in a 14-10 loss to San Diego on Wednesday, thus preventing him from making a scheduled start today in the first game of a three-game series against Atlanta.
While Miguel Batista and Brandon Webb were pushed up a day, each will be on four days’ rest for the first two games of the Atlanta series.
Orlando Hernandez, Vargas and even Juan Cruz, who lasted just of an inning Wednesday, were mentioned as possible Sunday starters by manager Bob Melvin after Wednesday’s game.
Hernandez’s health appears to be in question, however, after he left his Tuesday start with soreness in his back and side. He was to be evaluated further after throwing his bullpen session today.
The D-Backs did not immediately return phone messages Thursday night.
Jarvis has a 3.64 ERA in nine starts for Tucson, although his record is a deceiving 2-5. He had 37 strikeouts against only 13 walks going into his shortened outing against Round Rock.
Jarvis, 36, has played parts of 11 seasons in the major leagues and was San Diego’s opening-day starter in 2002 after going 11-6 with a 3.38 ERA with the Padres in 2001, his only full season in the majors.
He was 11-6 with a 3.38 ERA at Triple-A Memphis last season, striking out 112 in 157 innings, before being signed to a minor league contract with the D-Backs over the winter.
Because Jarvis is not on the 40-man roster, the D-Backs would have to move a player to the 60-day disabled list or designate someone for assignment to make room.
I would like it more if they gave Enrique Gonzalez a chance or perhaps Nippert.
