University of Maryland administrators told at least one prominent men's basketball booster that Terrapins head coach Kevin Willard plans to leave for Villanova, but that Maryland is making a "last-ditch effort" to retain Willard, according to a report early Friday from Baltimore Sun's Taylor Lyons.

Multiple reports indicated that Villanova had interest in head coach Richard Pitino before Pitino was named Big East rival Xavier's head coach earlier this week.

Willard's fourth-seeded Terps lost Thursday night to top seed Florida in an NCAA tournament Sweet 16 game in San Francisco, 87-71. Willard told reporters after the game that he didn't know what he's doing next.

Willard was a Big East head coach for Seton Hall from 2010 to 2022. He's been Maryland's head coach for three seasons.

Villanova fired head coach Kyle Neptune earlier this month. Neptune was 54-47 in three seasons as the Wildcats' head coach, with no NCAA tournament appearances.
