LEXINGTON — Behind a stingy defense, the Henderson County High School girls basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 quarterfinals for the third straight year.
The Colonels scored 20 points off turnovers and recorded 13 steals in a 45-30 victory over Marshall County in Thursday’s first round of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
Brooklyn Gibson led No. 9-ranked Henderson County (28-5) with 15 points. A’Tylia Green added 11 points, four assists and a game-high five steals.
The Colonels will face the Daviess County-Danville Christian winner in Friday’s 6 p.m. quarterfinal.
Skyler Waller posted eight points to lead Marshall County (25-7), which shot 34.4% and committed 20 turnovers.
Up 21-17 at halftime, Henderson County opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run to take control. Allyson Rideout’s 3-pointer gave the Colonels a 32-19 lead at the 2:32 mark.
Henderson County hit 7 of 8 shots in the third quarter and outscored Marshall County 16-4.
