I can verify that BK has been mediocre lately. (I watch Red Sox games on Extra Innings now).

For example, BK has been named the closer, except for games vs. the Yankees. He's incredibly inconsistent, sometimes looking unhittable--other times missing targets by two feet. His saving grace is that the other aquisitions haven't done any better (Scott Williamson looks better).

Red Sox Nation is fun to watch. They're whiny & entitled with a sense of dread. When BK first became their closer, the Park would get amazingly quiet for a game closing situation. He's been booed off the mound when the A's hit him for 4 in a key blown save (Durazo getting a key hit). Then again this happened in the 8th because of the previous night's disaster.

BK's somewhat charmed too. Tonight (9/3) in the 9th tie score, he left a bad pitch inside for a pull double but luckily the White Sox sent the runner to be thrown out at home with one out. Then in the 10th protecting a one-run lead, the last out was a fly to the fence, but the replay on BK showed him pointing up celebrating as if he has it calibrated how much he can give up these things.

That's a pretty good description, Steve. although I'd say they feel entitled TO a sense of dread - I swear, I check in when they're clicking off a string of runs, and the sky is falling, we just can't see it yet, still too high up there. But it IS falling. A single lousy game, and THERE IT IS!! SKY!! DUCK!!!

It is a fan orientation I am glad to have shed. And I will not let this current embattled bunch of snakes make me have flashbacks or a relapse.

IMHO, the Red Sox & Yankees example shows why it's important for a club to establish a personality & identity, whether it's being champions or chronic mediocrity.

The Diamondbacks were the class of the four 90's expansion teams. With intelligent talent evaluation, rebuilding doesn't have to take 5 years.

No, the Diamondbacks and Marlins showed that throwing a bunch of money at free agents can get you a chamionship. The Devil Rays and to some extent the Rockies have developed a lot of their players from their farm system.

The Devil Rays chose this year to decide and develope their pro team from the minors.

TBY teams have included:

Fred McGriff
Jose Canseco
Greg Vaughn
Wade Boggs
Dave Martinez
Roberto Hernandez
Bobby Witt
and Vinny Castilla

on their teams. All 30+ yr old FA's (a lot of them big $$)

and it's gotten them a peak season of 69 wins.
