The Atlanta Falcons are playing a game of chicken with quarterback Kirk Cousins, and thus far, it seems to be working. Even though the 36-year-old is set to make $27.5 million in base pay this season, the Falcons have insisted they could keep Cousins on the roster as a high-priced backup to Michael Penix Jr.
While there should be a healthy market for Cousins, Atlanta doesn't seem willing to cut him and he has a no-trade clause in his contract. However, it's been reported that Cousins would consider waiving his no-trade clause after the 2025 NFL draft to avoid going somewhere with another rookie QB.
The Cleveland Browns are one potential option for Cousins. The team has yet to recover from the disaster that was trading for Deshaun Watson in 2022 and could be in the market for a veteran stop-gap at quarterback. Cousins fueled trade speculation on Thursday when he was spotted at a "Chipotle" restaurant in Westlake, Ohio.
The veteran QB even responded to a post on Twitter with his favorite order: "salad with double chicken."
According to a report from NFL insider Albert Breer, Cousins recently met with Falcons owner Arthur Blank to express his desire to start for another team in 2025. Many assumed Atlanta would give in release Cousins, but that simply isn't what's best for the team.
With Aaron Rodgers taking his sweet time to find his next team, and the New York Giants signing both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, there should be a market for Cousins after the draft. If the Falcons can pull off a post-June 1 trade, another team would be on the hook for Cousins' $27.5 million salary.
The Browns have added former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, but he's not a starting-caliber QB based on what he's shown early in his career. Cousins would make a lot of sense for Cleveland, and Falcons fans are hoping a deal transpires.
