The sad thing is that there is no reason why his contract should not be considered one of the better ones. He has all the ability in the world. He just chooses to play selfishly.

I read somewhere one of the Suns better options to deal with Knight's contract is to wait until September to pay him in full for the 2017 season and then prorate the remainder of his contract in a buyout over something like three years.

It wouldn't hurt as bad as some other buyout options that have him on the books for a longer period of time.

His contract runs for 3 more years after this one anyways, so really that doesn't change anything. They can buy him out but he'll count against the cap for 3 years regardless, maybe more if they stretch him.

Perhaps it was a prorated over 6 years or better yet... I have found the link. ;)

The part in bold would seem to be the most favorable buyout option for Knight.

UPDATED: July 16, 2017 at 4:34 pm

BRANDON KNIGHT SALARY OWED

2017-18: $13,618,750
2018-19: $14,631,250
2019-20: $15,643,750

TOTAL: $43,893,750

If Knight is waived before August 31 and Phoenix uses the stretch provision under the new CBA, the amount will be paid over seven seasons (twice the number of years left plus one) at $6.3 million per year, according to Larry Coon’s CBAFAQ.com.

But if Knight were to be waived Sept. 1 or later, this season’s salary would be paid to him as expected with the final two being paid over five seasons at $6.1 per year (twice the number of remaining years plus one). The second option would seemingly be the smarter move for a team that, at present, can afford taking on his current year’s deal as is.

The Suns would be able to choose whether a contract counted against the cap per the original contract, or revamped to mirror the stretched figures, according to CBAFAQ.com.

As far as some of the other bad contracts listed in the article, Knight's contract is not bad as some.

We just need to find another usable bad contract to trade him for or somehow use him in a Carmelo Anthony trade.

I do think if Knight is traded to an Eastern Conference team he might play much better.

I wrote about him getting stretched in another thread. Bolded the main part regarding how much he'd cost and for how long.

We could use the "Stretch Provision" to lessen the cap hit, like we did with Beasley.

If we waive him before August 31st we could stretch the remainder of his deal out over 7 years. He's owed $43.90 million over the next 3 years, stretch that out twice as long plus 1 extra year and it would count against the cap for the next 7 years at $6.27 million per year. That would free up about $7.35 million this offseason. The last year he'd count on our cap would be 2023-24. That's a long time but a manageable amount annually.

I'm not sure if we could stretch a player a year after he was waived, like if we waived him this offseason, ate his whole salary this year but decided to stretch the remaining 2 years next offseason to free up more cap space. If we wanted to do that, we could just wait until after September 1st though and let his cap hit of $13.62 count this season. The remaining amount would be stretched over the next 5 years, so he'd be on the books for 6 years in total instead of 7 but we'd get no cap relief this season. He's due a combined total of $30.275 for 2018-19 & 2019-20. Stretched over 5 seasons it would be a cap hit of $6.05 million a year. The final year that would count against the cap would be 2022-23.

I seem to recall only being on the hook for the buyout amount with Beasley when we stretched his remaining contract out but I could be wrong. I think his deal had incentives though and wasn't fully guaranteed which is what I could be thinking of. I got the contract info from HERE and the info on the stretch provision from the CBA FAQ, questions 65 & 66. I think we might be able to get some minor relief against the cap if he signs elsewhere though, whatever he signs for could be removed from the cap hold. I'm not 100% sure on that part, will have to read up on Buy Outs more.

What a headache. Do you play him behind Booker or let Reed play. Do you let him play at all. Do you wait and see if someone gets hurt. I would have loved to be a fly in the room when they told him he was done for the year.
My cut feeling is play him, Suns are not going to win unless they run and gun. Play small ball.

I'd rather see Knight get playing time than Mike James but not over Reed. I thought letting Barbosa go would open minutes for him but Reed was a surprise in Summer League and appears to be a capable backup at SG, not giving up size when Booker sits. Maybe after another preseason and training camp though Knight has finally bought into being a Jamal Crawford style 6th man. He has the talent but I don't know if he has the smarts to adapt.

I think Knight will be bought out if he can not somehow be traded. I'm not sure if he is interested in staying with the Suns. A buyout maybe the focus of Knight and his agent. Of course I could be totally wrong as well.

Mike James has a two-way contract that will keep him on the Suns roster for the first 45 days which will force the Suns to make a decision early to keep him after he is paid about $200,000. My guess is the Suns keep him as a 3rd PG for the season.

Knight feels like the type of guy that's going to eventually find his way to another team and go back to being a near all-star. Would be par for the course for the Suns.

Also, there's no way I include a 1st round pick to dump his contract. (Which really isn't horrible if he plays anywhere near his potential.) If he doesn't want to take on a 6th man role he can just sit on the bench for the year. But attaching a first just to ditch a somewhat-bad contract would be a terrible move.

Knight would still have a role on this team if it weren't for Ulis. This is the way it is in the nba. The narrative on a player gets exaggerated, both to the positive and negative. I will probably get blasted over this but Booker has been exaggerated to the positive and Knight to the negative.

Don't get me wrong. I would rather go with Bledsoe, Booker and Ulis before Knight. But he is not as bad as he is being made out to be around the league--and those darn Youtube videos.

:) You should get blasted for that. Knight can't get exaggerated to the negative enough. He's that bad. Booker and frankly most of the rest of the team needs a lot of work defensively.

I think Booker has superstar potential but he isn't there yet, obviously. He is currently one dimensional, he isn't bringing much to the table besides scoring.

But Knight, he might not actually be terrible in a different situation but I agree with Joe Mama, it is impossible to overstate how terrible he was for us last year. He was worse than playing 4 on 5, almost anytime he touched the ball he negatively effected the play, he consistently took the offense out of sink, he played slow, terrible isolation basketball at a rate about as inefficient as could be imagined... and that is him on offense. Defensively he was arguably worse.

I don't think he is actually that bad of a player, he has talent but I don't know if it translates to winning 5 on 5 basketball.
