Doug Liman Producing New Knight Rider Series
Source: Variety
September 27, 2007

NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," hiring Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) to produce a Transformers-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.

Variety says the network is developing a two-hour pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature schedule allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.

Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside executive producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Productions.

The trade says the success of Transformers had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that small screen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.

It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original series, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, the series is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car.

I used to have an '82 Trans Am just like the KITT car. Talk about a dog. A 305 with a 5-speed transmission, tune-port injection. It was crap and not worth of the TA name. Also broke ****** mounts quicker than I could replace 'em.

Wish I'd just gone with the 78-1/2 DKM TA like I originally planned. Now THAT was a car worthy of the Trans Am name, though I couldn't afford to drive it these days with these gas prices. Oof.

I suspect the new KITT car will be foreign.

Somehow I chuckled about the guy in the video eating the hamburger on the floor also driving a car like that.

I know someone involved with this project and I should be able to give updates on it - bottom line, Liman's likely NOT directing and this will be awful.

KITT now voiced by... Val Kilmer.

Kilmer Replaces Arnett as KITT in Knight Rider
Source: Variety
February 7, 2008

A carmaker conflict has caused NBC to hire Val Kilmer to replace Will Arnett as the voice of KITT on its "Knight Rider" revival, reports Variety.

Arnett ("Arrested Development") had already completed his part for the pilot, which is slated to debut on NBC on Sunday, February 17 at 9/8c. Producers Doug Liman, Dave Bartis and Dave Andron -- along with the network and studio -- were all fine with his performance.

For the better part of a decade, however, Arnett has done voice-over work for General Motors -- as the voice of GMC Trucks. NBC's new "Knight," however, is "played" by a Ford Mustang.

Not surprisingly, when GM found out about the Ford connection, it asked Arnett to pull out.

"I was very excited at the prospect of playing the part of KITT in the new 'Knight Rider' movie," Arnett said. "However, because of a long relationship with General Motors as the voice of GMC Trucks, I had to respectfully withdraw from the project."

Had Pontiac still been making a TA then I'm sure they would have gone with it. However since GM couldn't keep their pony cars affordable and like-able by different types of drivers they lost out on this series. Also, the GTO (Monero from across the pond) isn't in production any more. 3 and out for it.

Clearly I'm biased about the car chosen but the writers, producers, whatever gave a clear reason why they chose a Ford Mustang.

The reason they chose Mustang is Ford Money period. Whatever just will make it unwatchable to some, like me.

Oh yeah, money was a driving factor. But you honestly think people will watch it if they had the GTO in its place? I doubt it... While the GTO is quick it blends in with everything else on the road. Honestly I can barely tell the difference from a GTO and an Acura TL from the ass end at a distance.

They could have held off for the new Camaro...

I'm surprised they didn't use a Prius with all the attention on hybrids these days.

I'm not a art-snob, but I'm pretty sure that was one of the worst TV movies I have ever seen.

Everyone has standards and a threshold for stupidity that cannot be crossed. The bar was very low when Knight Rider first ran because we still watched sit-coms with canned laughter. When HBO changed the game, we all became a little smarter and are no longer afraid to call out crap when we see it!

That still doesn't explain how reality television continues to exist, but I'm still working on my "we're smarter TV viewers because HBO had the guts to create Sopranos and Lloyd Braun sacrificed his job to approve a $13 million pilot for the smartest show in the history of broadcast" theory.

OK, scary stats time:

Knight Rider pulled an 8.4/13 share in this market. In annihilated everything in its path, including new content from Fox.

I actually kinda liked it...for most of the reasons people have mentioned they hated it. I'm old enough to remember the original and other Action/Dramas of that era. I think the cheese in this version is done on purpose. I mean they even did the cliffhanger commercial thing...You know, the long dramatic pause before something bad is going to happen, and then it goes to a commercial? Anyway, I think everything about this show was deliberate.

Then to be fair I should point out that I never really got Andy Kaufman's stuff either.
