Kordell Stewart has agreed to a two-year deal to become the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback, SportsLine.com has learned.
Financial terms of the deal were not available. The Bears had been pushing for Stewart to make a decision by Thursday.
Stewart was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers after eight seasons of both brilliant and erratic play.
Stewart, who lost his starting job last year to Tommy Maddox, was one of three quarterbacks to visit the Bears last week, along with Jake Plummer (who then left Arizona for the Denver Broncos) and Jeff Blake, signed Wednesday by the Arizona Cardinals.
The Bears had a quarterback opening after releasing Jim Miller.
Before becoming the Steelers' starter in 1997, Stewart was known as "Slash," a multidimensional threat who could make plays as a quarterback, running back and receiver.
As a quarterback, he led the Steelers to two AFC title games but threw three interceptions in each Pittsburgh loss.
The Bears are coming off a 4-12 season.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
