KU's Rush arrested for failure to appear on traffic charges
Associated Press
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Brandon Rush, the leading scorer the past two years for No. 3 Kansas, was arrested Thursday for failing to appear in court on traffic charges. He was released from jail after posting $500 bond.
Rush failed to appear in court on Nov. 28 on charges of driving with a suspended license and speeding on Oct. 19, and for driving on the wrong side of the road and having no proof of insurance stemming from a case in December 2006.
The Jayhawks (8-0) next play Saturday against DePaul. Coach Bill Self said Rush, a 6-foot-6 junior, would participate.
"I'm not going to suspend him, no," Self told reporters Thursday.
Rush has been coming off the bench while working his way back from ACL surgery in June, and game by game he has seemed to regain the skills that made him an All-Big 12 selection last year.
He had nine points and 10 rebounds in an 85-47 victory over Eastern Washington on Wednesday night.
"We are disappointed because our players need to be more responsible when handling situations in dealing with the law," Self said in a statement.
"Brandon did not appear in court, therefore, this happened. This is a costly lesson for him and a great lesson for the rest of our players."
Rush, who was not scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, apparently went to resolve the unpaid tickets. He was ordered by a judge to be taken to Douglas County Jail when the warrants were discovered. He posted bond and was released and will now await the assignment of a future court date.
"Although this matter has been reported publicly, any team punishment will be handled internally," Self said.
Rush, who is averaging 10.3 points per game, had planned to skip his junior year and go into the NBA draft but returned to school after injuring his knee.
