Larry Fitzgerald keeps promise to his mother, earns college degree

It was a promise 13 years in the making, but a promise is a promise.

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald kept his word to his late mother, and earned his college degree, graduating in communications with a minor in marketing from the University of Phoenix.

The 32-year-old wideout initially gave his word to his mother when he was enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, before she died in 2002 from breast cancer.

“I feel blessed to have had her for 19 years, and she was around long enough to shape me into the man I am today,” Fitzgerald told Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic. “But I’m sad at the fact that she busted her ass for so many years so I could live my dream, and she never saw the things I could’ve given her. That hurts.

“But I know when I’m out doing things in the community, she would be proud, because who I am now is a result of lessons she taught me when I had her.”

There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to accurately describe Larry Fitzgerald and his legacy.

My brother is a teacher in the Minneapolis area he teaches for a small Lutheran school. Fitz went to a small Lutheran school for grade school in Minneapolis my brothers school plays sports against the school that Fitz went to. The poop on him as a kid he wasn't a great student, good kid who tried hard in the classroom with not a ton of sucess acedemically. It's always refreshing to see the perseverance he has that nothing will stop him.

Larry is a class individual. He sets an example for all other athletes in all sports on how to live the right way.

We are very fortunate to have such a player on our team.

I like Fitz.

But I think there is a side to him that is only known by the NFL elite, past and present.

I saw the dude driving his (either lambo or ferrari; Im not a big car guy) down the 101 south of UofP one day. He was in the right lane doing 60 (posted 65)...

I may be off base, but Im a bit sick of the constant good boy feed from his camp. I am guessing its either part of his contract, or its part of the reason he secures big contracts (and lets not BS; dude has done exceptionally well), but its as if the guy walks on water. None of us do that.

I like hearing the little stories about him like the one above. Hearing that he was a bad student in the classroom makes me appreciate him all the more. The way public schools are structured today, our boys are behind the 8-ball. Grades are based on compliance and behavior, more than they are intellect and "performance." This puts the majority of boys at a total disadvantage, compared to the girls.

It would be nice to see Fitz speak up about this topic.

I say you totally outed Fitzgerald. Driving five MPH under the speed limit in the RIGHT lane! What an arrogant jerk Fitz is!!!!!! Yeah, dude, he's no second coming of Jesus, and it took you to show his real character.

Both words were misspelled in your post. :D

Sarcasm: the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

So he was in a really great car, which he can afford because he's rich, and he was driving under the speed limit. I'm not seeing a problem with that.

Never called him an arrogant jerk, nor was I slandering him. Simply pointing out how the dude is in constant marketing mode. My reference to the instance of him driving 5mph under the speed limit was to highlight that hypothesis.

Again, being the icon he is, I believe he would serve young men better with the stories of how he wasn't always this water walker type/struggled as a student/etc.

The real jerks are the keyboard warriors who pull words out of context, just to be jerks.

I read an interview, a couple of years ago, where he said he drives slower than he once did because he has a son. He said he changed old habits so he could be a better father. And because he had new responsibilities as a dad.

He said he's also turned down the volume of the car stereo, since his son's birth, so he won't get distracted.

Maybe, instead of being some kind of scheming, image-aware, super-star athlete, he's just a guy from Minnesota who does the right thing.
