Lucasfilm Making Changes to Original Star Wars Trilogy?
Source: The Digital Bits
Thursday, November 20, 2003

The Digital Bits has received news that Lucasfilm may be making more changes to the original "Star Wars" films for DVD.

We've heard from a number of interesting (and we believe reliable) inside sources that Lucasfilm is currently making major new changes to the original Star Wars films - the kind of changes he began a few years ago with the theatrical "Special Edition" releases. These changes include new special effects, revised and updated shots and scenes, and new footage shot with actors Hayden Christensen (Anakin) and Ian McDiarmid (the Emperor) that would flesh out moments with their characters in the original films. For example, an aged and scarred Hayden now appears as Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi when Luke removes Vader's helmet. Among the other changes reportedly being made are the restoration of the original "Han shoots first" moment from Star Wars and a revamped lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan and Vader.

It's an unfounded rumor.

"And the films that are coming out on DVD next fall are the Special Editions you've seen already. The ones released in '97. No changes. Nothing done to them."

That would still suck.

Release the films as they were in 77, 80, and 83....not these "special editions" from 97. UGH.

At least put both versions in a boxed set or something. It could easily be done.

Yeah, I agree with you there. It's pretty stupid on Lucas' part because even he released SE and original release DVD sets, I can pretty much guarantee you most fans would buy both. I own the SE's and the originals on VHS, I'd just like to get a more long-lived format.

You can convert VHS to dvd pretty easily with a $45 vid capture card. Obviously it's not going to be uber DVD quality but you wont have to worry about wearing out the disc.

Cardinal Mike!!

There are bootleg DVDs of the original Star Wars movies ripped from the laserdisks, as well. A bit better quality and less work. ;)

I also read that they are going to revamp Episode I.

Maybe this is how George Lucas finishes out his life. Redo-ing the same 6 movies over and over

For the record, I enjoyed the visual enhancements to the first movies....but the Greedo shoots first scene ruined it for me.

I wouldn't say it ruined it for me, but it was still bogus. I liked the fact that Han fragged that Fraggle first!

So when do we get the Willow Special Edition, with Joanne Walley's digitally enhanced nude scenes? :D

I'm weird, see I'm a Star Wars geek but I've NEVER seen the updated OT. I have the original trilogy on VHS. I would like to eventually see the updated RotJ because of the final scenes. Maybe I'll just have to rent it sometime. I heard Luke screams on his way down the shaft in ESB, is that true?? He jumped!! How can that be true?!

ESB is the most improved of the SE trilogy IMO.

The ice cave makes much more sense and cloud city actually looks the part.

Overall I liked the SE versions.

I think he should release the theatrical versions on DVD as well. I think his ego is the only thing stopping him.

I think is would suck to digitally put in other actors in to the origional films.
