I came home and my laptop that normally connects automatically to my Linksys router failed to do so. It connected to a neighbor's system and my router doesn't show up when I refresh the available network list.

So I go to linksys.com and that is the only internet site that won't load. I tried calling them, but they are experiencing "unusually heavy" phone call volume (probably what they always say).

What's going on?

I came back a few hours later and everything was back running normally.

Weird.

Do you use the INTEL or the standard Window Wireless manager program?

It's my experience that the Windows settings can at times override the INTEL's wirelessmanager eventhough I've disabled the Windows wirelessmanager.

I'm guessing this is what happened. If it is... Try enabling the Windows Wireless manager. Rank your own network #1 and then delete/remove all other networks. Then disable the Windows wireless manager again.

I think you are right. I used to use the Windows manager, but I had the Intel Proset/Wireless thing running at the same time. I messed around with those things and it's now set up differently than it was. I put my code into the Intel manager and now the little clamshell deal is green, whereas before it was always white.

Not totally sure what's going on, but it seems to be working now.

The intel utility is probably a little more user friendly and detailed.

It boils down to personal preference IMO.

I think the secondary connection utilities perform better but I seem to continually have problems with certain things when the windows wireless management is turned off so I just use it... Kind of like trying to turn off automatic updates and keep it off... It freaking always turns itself back on so I just leave it on...

Netgear won't even work with the stupid Windows Wireless.... you can turn it off by disabling the Windows Zero Config service
