MIDWAY – Oak Grove defeated rival North Davidson 3-1 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference softball Friday at Oak Grove.

Chloe Smith had a pair of hits and all three RBIs to lead the Grizzlies (5-5 overall, 2-0 MPC) – including an inside-the-park home run in the fifth that drove in the go-ahead runs. Izzy Lawrence and Harper Sugg also had two hits each.

Mary Peyton Hodge struck out 17 in earning the complete-game win. She allowed one run, which tied the game in the fifth, while scattering just four hits and no walks.

The teams will play again April 8 at North.

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, ATKINS

HIGH POINT – High Point Central edged Atkins 12-11 in Mid-State 3A Conference softball Friday at Central. The Bison improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, RAGSDALE

HIGH POINT – Southwest Guilford won 10-0 in five innings against rival Ragsdale in Metro 4A Conference softball Friday at Southwest.

Makayla Stefanik had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Cowgirls (7-4 overall, 5-1 conference). Kaylee Patel also had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Trystan Harris added a triple and an RBI. Caroline Christman drove in a run.

Christman earned the pitching win in two innings. She and Stevee Kendrick, who threw three innings, each struck out four.

Gracie Hitchcock and Alexis Gray each had a hit for the Tigers (8-4, 2-4).

EAST DAVIDSON, SALISBURY

SALISBURY – East Davidson beat Salisbury 22-11 in five innings Friday in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference softball at Salisbury.

Sophie Hampton had three hits, including a double and a home run, and five RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles (3-3 overall, 1-0 conference). Kyndall Williams added three hits, including a triple, and four RBIs, while Kyleigh Hedrick had two hits and three RBIs and Nikki Beal had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Alyssa Staley got the pitching win, striking out two in 2 1/3 innings. Williams and Hedrick each added 1 1/3 innings.

LEDFORD, MONTGOMERY CENTRAL

WALLBURG – Ledford won 10-0 in five innings against Montgomery Central in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference softball Friday at Ledford.

Alana Herrera had three hits, including two doubles, while Hailey Hoots doubled, homered and drove in two for the Panthers (7-1 overall, 2-0 conference). Cassidy Murray had two hits and an RBI, while Leah Leonard, Newsome and Emma Tesh, who tripled, each had a hit and drove in a run. Maggie Leach and Grace Henry each had two hits, including a double.

Leonard earned the complete-game win, striking out four while allowing no hits and one walk.

BASEBALL

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, NORTHEAST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT – High Point Central fell 21-4 in three innings against Northeast Guilford in Mid-State 3A Conference baseball Friday at Central. The Bison dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, NORTHERN GUILFORD

HIGH POINT – Southwest Guilford downed Northern Guilford 12-2 in six innings Friday in Metro 4A Conference baseball at Southwest.

Ryan Maness had two hits while Connor Kennedy doubled and drove in three to lead the Cowboys (8-2 overall, 6-0 conference). Ryan Berry also had a hit and two RBIs, while Devin Hernandez and Kaden Morgan each had a hit and an RBI. Graham Sutherland, Eric Lovett and Brendan Snider drove in a run each.

Morgan earned the complete-game pitching win, striking out nine.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, CARVER

KERNERSVILLE – Bishop McGuinness won 23-1 against Carver in Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference baseball Friday at Bishop.

Spencer Richard and James Rashford each had two hits and two RBIs for the Villains (5-6 overall, 2-0 conference). Lambeth added a hit and four RBIs, while Max Aguilar had two hits and an RBI. Aguilar also got the pitching win.

OAK GROVE, ASHEBORO

MIDWAY – Oak Grove won 14-2 in five innings against Asheboro in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball Friday at Oak Grove.

Aidan Murphy had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Grizzlies (7-4 overall, 2-0 conference). Carson Everhart had two hits and three RBIs, while Zeriah Thompson had a hit and two RBIs. Grayson Messer also had a hit and an RBI.

Seth Yarborough earned the complete-game win, striking out four.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN – Ragsdale defeated Southeast Guilford 8-2 in Metro 4A Conference baseball Friday at Southeast Guilford.

Dillon Bullard had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Tigers (7-3 overall, 4-2 conference). Ryan Hendricks and Owen Robinson, who homered, each had two hits and two RBIs. Kyle Maness and Braden Bradford each had two hits and an RBI.

Robinson struck out 11 in getting the complete-game pitching win.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, ATKINS

SUMNER – Southern Guilford edged Atkins 3-2 in Mid-State 3A Conference baseball Friday at Southern. The Storm improved to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

THOMASVILLE, NORTH ROWAN

THOMASVILLE – Thomasville rolled past North Rowan 22-11 in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference baseball Friday at Finch Field.

Matthew Bankhead had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs for the Bulldogs (). Leonel Guzman added three hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs, while Bryan Serrano Rodriguez and Manny Serrano each had a hit and two RBIs.

Elijah McNeair had five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings in earning the pitching win.

TRINITY, SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH

TRINITY – Trinity beat Southwestern Randolph 11-7 in PAC 1A/2A baseball Friday at Trinity.

Cohen Wolfe had three hits to lead the Bulldogs (8-2 overall, 2-2 conference). Cameron Hill got the pitching win, striking out five in 5 2/3 innings.

BOYS TENNIS

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, SMITH

HIGH POINT – High Point Central lost 7-2 against Smith in Mid-State 3A Conference boys tennis Friday at Central.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY

HIGH POINT – Wesleyan Christian won 8-1 against Westchester Country Day in PTAC boys tennis Friday at High Point Country Club's Willow Creek courts.

Tyler Layman (0-6, 6-3, 14-12), Henry Henning (6-2, 6-0), Eli Henning (6-0, 6-0), Isaac Hung (6-1, 6-0) and Forrest Morgan (6-3, 6-1) won in singles for the Trojans. Henry Henning/Layman (8-6), Miller Kraska/Eli Henning (8-1) and Hung/Morgan (8-2) won in doubles.

Clark Clodfelter (6-4, 6-4) won in singles for the Wildcats.

Wesleyan improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Westchester dipped to 2-2 and 1-2.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY

TRACK IN BOB DAVIDSON CHALLENGE

HIGH POINT – High Point University won the men's team score and took second in the Bob Davidson Team Challenge on Friday and Saturday at Vert Stadium.

The men totaled 235.5 points, ahead of second-place Akron with 123.5, while the women had 123.5 points, behind Akron with 142.5.

Winning events for the Panthers were: Quiana Williams (women's 100, 11.50), Brianna Malone (women's 800, 2:10.19), Ebba Ahman (women's 400 hurdles, 1:00.26), Alyssa Hendrix (women's 3000 steeplechase, 10:37.63), Tim Brown (men's 400, 46.84), Aiden Morrison (men's 3000 steeplechase, 9:15.53), Gavin Stevens (men's 5000, 14:55.12), Graham Ferguson (men's 800, 1:50.12), Jason Thomson (men's 1500, 3:49.54), Shaun Thomas (men's high jump, 6-9 3/4), Justin Sluijter (men's long jump, 24-9 1/4) and Jake Gherardi (men's javelin, 201-5).

WOMEN'S GOLF WINS LOW COUNTRY INTERCOLLEGIATE

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – High Point University won the team title while Anna Howerton captured the individual title in the Low Country Intercollegiate women's golf tournament Friday through Sunday at Moss Creek Golf Course.

The Panthers finished at 49-over for three rounds, beating second-place Samford by 22 shots in the 13-team field.

Howerton shot rounds of 74, 74 and 71 to finish at 3-over, winning by four shots over Wofford's Lilli Horn. Ella Perna tied for third at 10-over (78-78-70) while Julia McLaughin tied for sixth at 11-over (76, 75, 76) and Savannah Cherry, competing individually, tied for 25th at 26-over (80, 83, 79).

High Point will next play in The Patsy Rendleman on Monday and Tuesday in Salisbury.

BASEBALL AT MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS – High Point University won Saturday's game 11-7 but lost Friday's game 12-1 and Sunday's game 8-2 against Minnesota in nonconference baseball at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Miggy Echazarreta had two hits, including a double, and an RBI in Friday's game. Konni Durschlag and Landen Johnson each added a hit. Wade Walton took the loss, striking out one in 2 1/3 innings.

Brayden Simpson homered, doubled and drove in three during Saturday's game. Justin Ruiz also homered in a two-hit game and drove in two. Johnson doubled and drove in three. Former High Point Christian standout Dylan Story got the win, striking out two in five innings. Adam Grintz got the four-inning save.

Echazarreta had a hit and an RBI in Sunday's game. Johnson also drove in a run, while Jake McCarter added a double. Dalton Hitt took the loss in three innings, striking out two.

The Panthers (17-7) will visit Appalachian State on Tuesday.

MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO UNC

HIGH POINT – High Point University lost 14-2 against North Carolina in nonconference men's lacrosse Friday at Vert Stadium.

Collin Rovere and Owen Bunten scored for the Panthers (3-6). Colin Cooke had an assist. Zack Overend made 16 saves in goal.

High Point next plays Saturday against Hobart at home.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE WINS AT VIRGINIA TECH

BLACKSBURG, Va. – High Point University upended Virginia Tech 14-13 in nonconference women's lacrosse Sunday at Virginia Tech.

Reese Dowgiallo had four goals and three assists to lead the Panthers (4-4). Shannon Smith also scored four goals. Cha Esprit added two goals and an assist, while Allie Connally and Bella Germani each had a goal and an assist.

Ava Welsh made 14 saves in goal.

High Point opens Big South Conference play Wednesday at Presbyterian.
